Designation decoded

11W4 vs 19W4 vs Metric G-Series — Reading the Codes

US-style bar grating designations compress three decisions into one code: how close the bearing bars stand, how the panel is joined, and how far apart the cross rods run. Here is what each code means — and how it maps onto the metric builds our mill actually produces.

How it reads 11W4 19W4 Metric G-series
First numberBearing bar pitch in 1/16 in steps — 11 means 11/16 in, about 17.5 mm centers19 means 19/16 in, about 30 mm centersStated directly in mm, e.g. a 30 mm pitch
LetterW = welded at every bearing bar / cross rod intersectionW = welded, same electro-forged jointSet by the drawing — welded or press-locked
Last numberCross-rod pitch in inches — 4 in, about 100 mm centers4 in, about 100 mm centersThird field in mm, 100 mm typical
Duty it suitsClose-pitch pedestrian duty — foot traffic, heels, small debrisGeneral platform and walkway dutyWhatever pitch and depth you specify
Our mill matchQuoted as a custom-pitch welded build; press-locked close mesh down to 11/11 mm is the nearest standard close buildDirect match — our welded 30 mm pitch is the 19W4 equivalentBuilt to drawing from the same lines

Buyers who search a 19 4 grating or a 19 4 bar grating are almost always describing the same 19W4 panel — the letter W simply got dropped between the numbers. This page decodes the designation itself: pitch numbers, process letter and the duty they imply. If your question is instead how these panels frame into walkways and platforms, that grating-level view lives on the 11W4 grating page; the full welded model family starts at bar grating.

Anatomy of the code

How to Read a US Bar Grating Designation

11/16 in ≈ 17.5 mm bearing bar pitch

1 · First number — bar pitch

Counted in sixteenths of an inch. 11 reads as 11/16 in, about 17.5 mm center-to-center — a deliberately close stance, which is why 11W4-pattern panels land on pedestrian floors rather than wheel loads.

W = welded at every intersection

2 · The letter — how it is joined

W stands for welded: every bearing bar / cross rod crossing is resistance-forged in one pass on our electro-forging line, so nothing can work loose under foot traffic.

4 in ≈ 100 mm cross-rod pitch rods tie the bars into one panel

3 · Last number — cross-rod pitch

Read in whole inches: 4 in, about 100 mm centers. The rods carry no load in the span direction — they lock bar spacing and give the panel its transverse stiffness.

Custom pitch, any quantity

Custom 11W4 bar grating means a custom-pitch welded panel — cut and banded to your drawings, in any quantity. Small trial orders are welcome before you commit to a full program.

A123 galvanized, samples in 5–7 days

11W4 grating with ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 hot-dip galvanizing for exterior and wash-down exposure — samples ship in 5–7 working days with the coating already on.

Applications

Where 11W4-Pattern Close Pitch Earns Its Keep

A close bearing bar pitch costs more steel per square metre, so it is worth specifying only where feet — not wheels — are the load. These are the positions where 11W4-pattern panels are the right call.

Pedestrian platforms

Close pitch under steady foot traffic — access platforms and plant floors where people stand and walk all shift.

Mezzanine & catwalk floors

Comfortable underfoot on elevated walkways; small openings that shed debris while feeling like a solid floor.

Pedestrian trench covers

Walk-over drainage in yards and around process floors — close bars keep heels out of the channel.

Stair treads

Close-pitch treads for escape and access stairs — plain or serrated top, banded ends and a nosing to your drawing.

Materials, tables & documents

Designation codes fix the pitch, not the load — that depends on bar depth, thickness and span. Load and deflection tables for each pitch and depth are provided with your quote rather than guessed at here. What you can count on:

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
  • Factory inspection report with every shipment
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 11W4 mean on a bar grating drawing?

In the US designation convention the first number gives the bearing bar pitch in sixteenths of an inch, the letter gives the process (W = welded), and the last number gives the cross-rod pitch in inches. So 11W4 is a welded panel with bearing bars about 11/16 in (roughly 17.5 mm) apart and cross rods on 4 in (about 100 mm) centers — a close pitch intended for pedestrian duty.

Do you manufacture 11W4 bar grating at your mill?

We are a metric-spec mill, so we quote 11W4 and 19W4 as designation equivalents produced to your spec. The 19/16 in pitch of 19W4 maps directly onto our 30 mm welded pitch; the closer 11/16 in pitch is quoted as a custom-pitch welded build, with press-locked close mesh down to 11/11 mm available as the nearest standard close option.

What are the lead times and documents for an order?

An itemized quote lands within 24 hours, samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation. Every order leaves with an MTC to EN 10204 Type 3.1, a factory inspection report and a Declaration of Conformity — certified and tested, reports on request.
