Process comparison

Press-Locked vs Forge-Welded vs Swage-Locked

Buyers write press locked grating, press locked steel grating, press locked bar grating or pressure locked grating — they all mean the same forming idea: bars locked by pressure, not by welds. Here is how that process compares with the alternatives, with an honest note on which lines run in our own workshop.

Dimension Press-Locked Forge-Welded Swage-Locked
Forming principleCross bars mechanically pressed into notched bearing bars — no weldingEvery bearing-bar / cross-bar intersection resistance-forged under pressureCross bars swaged through pre-punched bearing bars
Load behaviorVery uniform load distribution; suited to pedestrian trafficHigh load capacity at wide spans; joints cannot work looseHigh transverse stiffness; holds fine bars firmly
Mesh rangeDown to 11 / 11 mm close mesh30 / 40 / 60 mm centersDense patterns; depends on bar selection
Panel flatnessExtremely flat — no weld heat, no distortionFlat panels straight off the lineFlat; depends on bar tolerances

How panels are made

From Notched Bars to a Locked Panel

Press locked steel grating needs only two forming steps — the joint is geometry, not a weld seam.

notched bearing bars cross bars laid in notch depth set to bar height

1 · Notching & assembly

Flat bearing bars are notched at every cross-bar position, then the flat cross bars are laid into the notches. Both members are plain flat bars — that is what gives press-locked grating its smooth, flat top and its regular appearance.

cross bar pressed into notched bearing bar

2 · Press-locking

The assembled grid goes through the press line: enormous even pressure deforms the notched bars around the cross bars, locking every intersection mechanically. No heat enters the panel — nothing distorts, and mesh can be set as close as 11 / 11 mm.

After pressing, panels are trimmed and banded to your drawings, then optionally sent for ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 hot-dip galvanizing at our certified partner plant — already counted inside your production window. Serrated flat-bar faces are available where the design calls for extra grip geometry.

Why specify press-locked

Why Buyers Specify Press-Locked Steel Grating

When a project calls for close mesh, a flush walking surface or a visible architectural pattern, press locked grating is the format specifiers reach for — and both welded and press-locked options are quoted from the same desk.

Close mesh down to 11 / 11 mm

Because the joint is pressed rather than welded, bar centers can run far closer than on a forge-welded line. Openings at 11 / 11 mm are small enough that a shoe heel or bicycle wheel will not drop through — municipal trench and tree-pit duty.

Ultra-flat, smooth on both faces

Flat-on-flat bar construction with no weld heat leaves panels dead flat and flush on top — the flat-top finish press locked bar grating is specified for on facades, screens and fine floors, where every panel face is on show.

Custom mesh, samples in 5–7 days

Custom mesh press grating is the norm, not the exception: send your bar sizes, centers and panel dimensions and we quote factory-direct FOB pricing, with sample panels and small trial orders welcome.

Applications

Where Press-Locked Panels Work Best

Close mesh plus a flush, even surface — pressure locked grating earns its place wherever the panel is walked on in ordinary shoes, or simply looked at.

Municipal trench covers

Curbside channels that drain stormwater while keeping heels, litter and cycle wheels out of the trench.

Tree pits & sidewalk grilles

11 / 11 mm openings let water and air reach roots while the sidewalk stays fully walkable.

Facades & sunscreens

Flat-top panels with a regular pressed pattern — press grating for facades where the grid itself is the finish.

Fine platform & mezzanine floors

Pedestrian-duty flooring in plants, plantrooms and rooftop plant decks — smooth underfoot, open to drainage.

Materials & test documents

Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Certified & tested, reports on request. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
  • Factory inspection report with every shipment
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is press-locked grating?

Press-locked grating is formed by pressing cross bars into notched bearing bars under high pressure, so the bars interlock mechanically — no welding and no weld heat. That is why the panels stay extremely flat and why the mesh can run as close as 11 / 11 mm.

Press-locked or welded steel grating — which should I choose?

Choose welded grating for heavy wheel loads and wide spans; choose press-locked for close mesh, flatness and a smooth finish on both faces. Both processes run in-house, and welded or press-locked options are quoted in the same 24-hour reply — send your loads and we will spec the right one.

Do you accept small orders of press locked steel grating?

Yes — small trial orders are welcome and samples ship in 5–7 working days. Mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, hot-dip galvanizing included. FOB Tianjin as standard, with an itemized quote per m² or per ton.
