What the term means
Open Grating vs Checker Plate — an Honest Comparison
Buyers use checker plate grating to mean two different products, and neither is one of our stock grating lines. Checker plate — also written chequered plate, and known as tread plate or floor plate — is a solid sheet with a raised pattern, not an open mesh. A chequered plate grating is therefore a fabricated panel: solid plate used on its own, or laid over an open grating for grip plus containment, both made to your drawings. On this site it is a derived format: we fabricate solid plate panels, or combined plate-over-grating panels, to your drawings. Here is what each construction actually does, so you can specify the right one.
Format A — solid checker plate
One raised-pattern steel sheet: flat, closed, load-spreading. Nothing falls through — but nothing drains through either. Sold as flooring in its own right; the word grating in the search is the buyer's word for steel flooring.
Format B — checker-plate-combined grating
A checker plate sheet fastened over or beside an open welded or press-locked panel. You keep part of the drainage and ventilation of grating and gain solids containment. Quoted as one composite panel, assessed per project.
| Dimension | Open Welded Grating | Checker Plate — Solid | Combined Plate + Grating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction | Bearing bars and cross bars form an open grid | One solid sheet with a raised lug or diamond pattern | Checker plate fastened over or beside an open grating panel |
| Water, snow & debris | Falls straight through — a self-cleaning deck | Stays on top — needs falls, holes or clearing | Partly sheds through gaps or punched holes |
| Solids containment | Small parts can drop through the mesh | Fully contained on a closed deck | Mostly contained — open area reduced |
| Load behavior | High capacity at wide spans, set by bar selection | Loads spread across the full sheet | Plate and grating share the load — assessed per project |
| Underfoot grip | Serrated bearing bars optional | Raised pattern grips across the whole surface | Raised pattern stays on the walking surface |
| Ventilation & light | Air and light pass through | Closed deck | Partly open |
| Our supply basis | In-house — welded and press-locked lines | Derived format — fabricated to drawings, no stock size list | Derived format — quoted to drawings as one panel |
If water must drain freely, our open lines are the honest answer — see welded grating and trench grating. Not sure which format fits? Send your drawings — we will spec it inside the 24-hour quote.
How the formats are built
From Drawing to Checker Plate Panel
1 · Plate cut to drawing
Checker plate sheets are cut to your panel sizes on the workshop saw and plasma path — thickness and pattern follow your specification, because there is no stock checker-plate size program to pull from.
2 · Combining with grating
For combined panels, the plate is fastened over or beside an open welded or press-locked panel to your detail. Load sharing and open area are assessed per project, so the composite is engineered, not guessed.
3 · Hot-dip galvanizing
Carbon steel panels go to a certified galvanizing partner near our mill for ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 hot-dip galvanizing — typically 2–3 days, already counted inside your production window.
Why specify checker plate
Why Buyers Move to a Checker Plate Surface
Flat top, high-load deck
The solid raised-pattern sheet spreads wheel and foot loads across its full area — a flat walking surface with no openings to bridge. Thickness is set by your loads, quoted to drawing.
Custom sizes, small MOQ
Every checker plate order is cut to drawings with free drawing review — and small trial orders are welcome, so you can test a panel before committing to a full program.
Factory-direct & tested
Quoted direct from the workshop, FOB Tianjin — no trader margin in between. Certified & tested, reports on request, with an MTC EN 10204 3.1 for every heat used.
Applications
Where a Checker Plate Surface Earns Its Place
The honest rule: specify a closed or partly closed deck when something must stay on it. Specify open grating when something must fall through it. These are the duties where checker plate wins.
Floors above occupied space
Mezzanines and storage decks over work areas — small parts and spill solids stay on the deck instead of raining through the mesh.
Ramps, docks & vehicle beds
A raised pattern underfoot on solid decks — loading ramps, dock plates and truck beds where wheels meet a continuous surface.
Landings & tread tops
Flat plate landings between grating flights, and checkered tops over open treads — fabricated with the same edging path as our stair treads.
Wet areas — use open grating
Where water must drain, a closed deck fights you. Our trench grating and welded open mesh lines are the right answer — we will say so in the quote.

Materials & test documents
Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531
The grating basis of combined panels is produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with joint inspection on our five-stage QC plan.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
Galvanized coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before plate or grating panels are released.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is checker plate the same thing as steel grating?
No. Checker plate — also called tread plate or chequered plate — is a solid sheet with a raised pattern and no open mesh. When buyers say checker plate grating they mean either that solid plate used as flooring, or a combined panel with the plate sitting over or beside an open grating. Both formats are derived products for us, quoted to drawings — there is no stock checker-plate size list.
Should I choose open grating or checker plate?
Choose open grating wherever water, oil, snow or debris must fall through — trench covers, outdoor walkways, washdown floors. Choose checker plate where solids and small parts must stay on the deck, such as floors above occupied space. Combined panels trade part of the open area for containment, so they sit between the two.
What is the lead time for checker plate orders?
Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.
