Open Ends vs Banded Edges vs Banded with Toe Plate
The same panel can leave the mill three ways. What changes is what happens at the edge — how loads enter the panel, how it is lifted, and how it finishes against a fall or a road. Here is the honest trade-off.

Terminology note: dense panels with closed edges are sometimes searched for as honeycomb grating. In trade language that almost always means close-mesh press-locked panels finished with banded edges — describe the mesh and the banding in your RFQ and we will quote exactly that.

What Banding Is — And the Ways We Close an Edge
1 · The band bar
A band is a flat steel bar welded across the ends of the bearing bars, closing the panel edge. Every bar end ties into one stiff member, so the edge stops being a row of cantilevered teeth and becomes a load-bearing frame side.
2 · Trim band
The everyday banded grating: trim bands of the same height as the bearing bars, flush with the walking surface. The edge feels smooth underfoot, hoses do not snag on bar ends, and the panel nests square for packing.
3 · Toe plate companion framing
Where an edge borders a fall or a road, an upstand toe plate runs along the banded edge. We supply toe plates as sourced companion items alongside our panels — specified to match the band height and finished with the same coating.
When to specify banding
When Panels Must Be Banded
Open ends are a legitimate, economical choice — but only when the edge never carries anything. These are the four situations where a banded edge is the correct engineering call, not an upgrade.
Exposed walking edges
Where people walk up to or along the panel edge — platform perimeters, walkway ends, aisle edges — the band carries their load into the panel.
Hinged & removable covers
A cover lifted by one edge hangs from its band. Lifting lugs and hinge points land on the band bar, never on open bar ends.
Stair tread ends
Treads land on carrier angles at their ends, so tread ends are closed with end plates or bands — formed in-house as part of tread fabrication.
Crane & forklift handling
Slings and forks pinch the edge. Banding keeps the panel square through loading, container packing and years of removal for cleaning.
The exception is equally clear: a panel that sits fully seated in a channel or rebate on all four sides, with no traffic on the edge, can ship with open ends and perform exactly as designed. We will say so in the quote when it is the right call.

Banding matters wherever the edge of the panel meets people, wheels or a lifting hook — these are the positions we quote most often.
Platform perimeters
Banded edges at every open side of mezzanines and maintenance platforms, with toe plates where the edge borders a fall.
Trench & pit covers
Covers that are lifted out for cleaning are banded at both lifting edges; fully seated flush covers can stay open-ended.
Access & hinged covers
Hinge halves and locking bars bolt to the band bar, so covers swing on a closed structural member rather than bar ends.
Stair treads & landings
Tread ends closed with end plates or bands, with nosing and carrier plates specified to suit the stringer detail.
