Three Ways to Build a Leading Edge
A grating nosing is the profile on the front edge of a stair tread — the strip of steel a foot meets first. We build it three ways: formed into the tread itself as our standard, or supplied as a companion item that bolts or bonds on. Here is how they differ.

What Each Nosing Looks Like in Section
1 · Serrated integral nosing
The front bearing bar is cut deeper and serrated, standing a few millimetres proud of the walking surface. Nothing is added afterwards — the edge is the tread, which is why it is our standard. Serration mechanics are described on the serrated grating page.
2 · Angle-nosing companion
An angle section runs across the tread front: one leg shields the edge, the other lies over the walking surface, bolted or welded in place. Supplied alongside our treads and cut to your tread width — a common choice when an existing flight needs its edges dressed.
3 · Abrasive-insert nosing
A hard mineral surface in a steel or polymer carrier, seated along the leading edge. These are sourced companion items we order with your tread batch — an honest way to add a clearly marked, aggressive edge without us pretending to make the insert itself.
Why the leading edge gets its own spec: the front of every step is where shoes land at an angle, where paint and zinc wear through first, and where the eye judges the stair in poor light. A nosing that stands proud, wears slowly and reads as a distinct line answers all three — as geometry and contrast, not as a coating promise.

Can a nosing be added to treads we already have?
Yes, in the companion formats: an angle nosing can be drilled and bolted across the front of an existing tread, and abrasive-insert strips are made to sit in a prepared channel along the edge. Integral serrated nosing cannot be added afterwards — it is formed when the tread is built.
How fast are nosing samples and tread production?
