A plant floor is a drainage decision as much as a load decision. Here is how open-mesh floor grating compares with solid steel plate where people walk — including the honest case where plate or close mesh wins.

How Floor Grating Carries Weight
Three rules decide whether a floor feels solid underfoot: which way the bearing bars run, how far they span, and what walks across them. Get these right and the mesh takes care of itself.
1 · Bearing bars span the supports
The bearing bars — the taller set — run across the supporting beams and carry the floor load. Cross bars only hold the bearing bars at pitch and spread a point load to its neighbours, so panels are always laid with bearing bars perpendicular to the steelwork beneath.
2 · Deflection is a span decision
Every floor deflects a little underfoot, and the sag grows steeply as the span lengthens. Bar height drives stiffness far more than bar thickness — an under-height floor feels springy long before it is at risk. Send us span and load; load tables are available on request.
3 · Foot traffic sets the surface
Plain bars suit clean, dry indoor floors; serrated bars bite into wet or oily soles and are the default for outdoor and process floors. Where heeled footwear crosses the floor, press-locked close mesh at 11 / 11 mm keeps every opening heel-proof.

With the bearing bars running across the supporting beams — the bearing bars carry the floor load and set the span, while cross bars only hold spacing. A panel laid the wrong way deflects far more than its rating. We mark the load direction on every shop drawing before cutting and banding.
