Choose the Floor by What Crosses It

A grated metal floor is specified from two decisions: how heavy the traffic is, and whether the surface runs plain or serrated. Bearing bars from 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm cover everything from an inspection catwalk to a forklift aisle — the table below shows typical selections within that range.

Duty class What crosses it Bearing bar, typical Surface choice Bar centers
Light pedestrianInspection routes, roof walkways, catwalks20×3 – 30×3 mmPlain is usually enough indoors30 / 40 / 60 mm
Standard plantDaily foot traffic, handcarts, tool trolleys40×4 – 50×5 mmPlain for dry aisles, serrated at doors and wash points30 / 40 mm
Heavy wheelForklifts, pallet trucks, drum routes60×5 – 100×8 mmSerrated recommended — grip under load30 mm and closer on request

Typical selections, not a substitute for engineering — load tables are available on request, and heavier specs such as heavy-duty grating follow the same production lines.

Know your spans but not your bar size? Send your drawings — we will spec it inside the 24-hour quote.

How the floor comes together

From Duty Survey to Installed Floor

wheel load bearing bars support steel — bars span across it

1 · Read the duty, not the catalog

Bearing bars carry the load and must sit perpendicular to traffic, spanning between supports. Fix the duty class first — bar size, centers and panel thickness all follow from it.

plain — sweeps clean, quiet under wheels serrated — bites when wet or oily

2 · Plain or serrated surface

The same panel, two top edges. Serrations are cut into the bearing bar itself, so the anti-slip performance does not wear off like a coating — it is part of the section.

3 · Cut, band, finish

Panels are cut to your openings and banded on the ends, then hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 at a certified partner plant — typically 2–3 days, already counted inside your production window.

Why specify grated

Why Maintenance Teams Specify a Grated Metal Floor

Anti-slip when the floor fights back

Washdown, oil mist and outdoor rain are where solid plate fails. A serrated grated metal floor sheds liquids through the mesh and keeps grip underfoot — an engineered anti-slip surface, not an additive.

Sized to the duty, made to order

From a light pedestrian catwalk to a heavy wheel loading route, every panel is cut to size and banded to your drawings — replacements for worn plant floors included. Drawing review is free.

Samples in 5–7 days, small MOQ

Order a sample panel first and check the surface and fit on your own supports — small trial orders are welcome before you commit a whole mezzanine or aisle.

Applications

Where a Grated Metal Floor Earns Its Keep

A metal grating floor lets wash water, dust and spills drop through instead of pooling on the walking surface — the reason plants keep specifying it where housekeeping and grip matter most.

Maintenance platforms

Light-duty floors for pumps, valves and conveyor lines — fast to cut around obstructions.

Plant aisles & mezzanines

Standard-duty floors for daily foot traffic and handcarts, sized panel by panel to your bay grid.

Wet & washdown areas

Serrated floors for food, chemical and process zones where water runs every shift.

Pits, trenches & access

Heavy wheel covers over machine pits, plus matching stair treads for the same order.

Materials & test documents

Floors carry people, so paper matters. We ship mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment, verified heat by heat at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:

  • Mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment
  • Factory inspection report with every order
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Which bearing bar size does my plant floor need?

Match the bar to what crosses the floor: light pedestrian routes are typically served by 25×3 to 30×3 mm bearing bars, daily plant traffic by 40×4 to 50×5 mm, and forklift or heavy wheel duty by 60×5 up to 100×8 mm bars. These are typical selections — send your spans and wheel loads and we will confirm from load tables, free, inside the 24-hour quote.

Should I choose a plain or serrated surface?

Plain surfaces sweep clean and run quieter under smooth-wheeled carts, so they suit dry aisles and storage mezzanines. Serrated surfaces keep grip when the floor is wet, oily or greasy, which is why washdown areas, machine pits and outdoor stairs usually get serrated. Both surfaces are available on every duty class, in carbon or stainless steel.

What are the lead time and minimum order for a grated metal floor?

Samples ship in 5–7 working days and production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, hot-dip galvanizing included. Small trial orders are welcome — useful when you are validating a replacement floor panel before a full rollout.
