The core trade-off
Open Area vs Strength in Every Drain Grid
Every drain grating negotiates the same conflict: more opening passes more water, more steel carries more load. Three decisions settle it for your project.
1 · Open area fights strength
Each extra millimeter of opening passes more peak flow but removes steel from the load path. 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers trade flow against bar count; 11 / 11 mm press-locked close mesh nearly closes the openings for heels and litter at the cost of open area.
2 · Traffic sets the bars
A grate under a pedestrian precinct and one under a truck crossing differ only in geometry: bearing bars step from 20×3 mm up to 100×8 mm and spans shorten as wheels get heavier. Name the class and the axle — we size to it.
3 · Environment sets the material
Standing water, de-icing salt and freeze–thaw rule outdoor duty: Q235B carbon steel goes out hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461. Washdown chemicals, food hygiene and chloride exposure point to SS304 or SS316 instead.

Should I choose galvanized carbon steel or stainless drain grating?
Outdoor trench, driveway and yard runs normally take hot-dip galvanized Q235B to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461. SS304 or SS316 is the better choice in washdown areas, food plants and chloride-exposed sites, where carbon steel would corrode from the first week.
