Gully grid fundamentals
What a Metal Gully Grid Is — and Which Format Fits
A gully grid is the square or rectangular metal grid that caps a gully pot or chamber: storm water drops straight through the open mesh while the bearing bars carry whatever crosses above — feet, pallet trucks or HGV wheels. Three formats cover almost every site.
| Dimension | Square grid, loose | Rectangular grid, loose | Frame + grid package |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical opening | One gully pot, yard gully or kerbside gully point | Wider gully throat or chamber across a paved area | Any opening where edges are broken or finished levels differ |
| How it seats | Grid seats directly on the chamber edge, lifted out for cleaning | Bearing bars span the shortest side of the opening | Grid sits level in the frame; the frame carries loads to the surround |
| Load framing | Pedestrian to light vehicle duty, set by bar depth | Deeper bars where wheels cross near a corner | Frame and grid specified together against the class you name |
| Mesh options | 30 / 40 / 60 mm welded centers | Same welded centers; 11 / 11 mm press-locked close mesh where heels cross | Any mesh in our range, matched to the frame aperture |
| Corrosion path | Hot-dip galvanized Q235B | HDG as standard; SS304 / SS316 where runoff is aggressive | Frame and grid finished to match the exposure |
| Sizing note | Cut to the clear opening plus bearing edges | Cut to chamber size, banded edges standard | Frame drawings welcome — grid made to match the frame |

Sizing to the chamber
How a Metal Gully Grid Is Sized
1 · Measure the clear opening
Start from the gully chamber, not the old grid: the clear opening it must cover, its depth, and the condition of the seating edges. A photo and two dimensions are enough to begin.
2 · Add bearing edges, span the short side
The grid oversizes the opening on every side so the bars land on solid edges, and the bearing bars run across the shortest dimension. Banded edges keep the panel square for decades of lifting in and out.
3 · Pick bars to the traffic
Pedestrian precincts run on light sections, even 11 / 11 mm close mesh where heels cross. Yards and kerbsides crossed by vehicles take deeper bearing bars on closer centers — bar heights run from 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm.
Why specify metal
Why Sites Run on a Metal Gully Grid
Fast-draining open mesh
Open area takes storm water straight down into the pot instead of pooling on the surface — the grid stays visible and self-cleaning while silt drops into the chamber where it can be lifted out.
Load-rated from foot to truck wheel
Handles storm water and truck wheels alike: bar depth and spacing are selected against the traffic above, with load classes referenced to EN 124 from A15 pedestrian duty to D400 carriageways.
Custom grids, frames and fixings in one quote
Covers, frames and grates against your drawings — every grid cut to its chamber, hot-dip galvanized or stainless, with a mill test certificate to EN 10204 3.1 traveling with the order.
Applications
Where Metal Gully Grids Work
Any point where a chamber meets traffic is gully grid country — one square or rectangular grid per pot, sized to the opening and specced to what crosses it.
Kerbside & road gullies
Deep-bar grids for chambers crossed by cars and trucks, framed where the carriageway finishes level with the grid.
Yards & forecourts
Yard gullies under forklift and pallet-truck routes — galvanized grids that shrug off washdown and de-icing salts.
Plant floors & washdown areas
Stainless SS304 / SS316 grids over gullies in food and chemical plants, where aggressive runoff would eat carbon steel.
Precincts & podium decks
Close-mesh grids where pedestrian heels cross all day — 11 / 11 mm openings keep shoes clear while rain still drains fast.

Materials & test documents
Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Grids leave with documentation, not promises:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Load class context
EN 124 Load Class Guide (referenced to EN 124)
Gully grids are bought by duty. The classes below are public EN 124 context for the traffic above the pot; we produce your grid to the class you name — the class itself is referenced, never claimed as held.
| Class | Typical duty above the gully | Grid framing from our range |
|---|---|---|
| A15 | Pedestrian zones, cycle paths, precinct and podium drainage | Press-locked or light welded sections; close mesh where heels cross |
| B125 | Footways, kerbsides, driveways and car parks | Light welded grids, banded edges, HDG finish |
| C250 | Kerbside gullies and yards crossed by cars and light trucks | Deeper bearing bars on closer centers |
| D400 | Carriageways and loading bays crossed by trucks | Deepest bars in range, frame + grid package advised |
Produced to your named class
Name the EN 124 class in your RFQ and the grid is produced to it — bar depth, spacing and framing selected against the duty, documents with the order.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I size a metal gully grid?
Measure the clear opening of the gully chamber, then specify the grid to oversize it on every side so the bearing bars seat on solid edges, with the bars spanning the shortest side. Send us the chamber size and the grid is cut to suit — frames and fixings can travel with it.
What load class do I need for a metal gully grid?
Pedestrian areas run on light welded or press-locked grids; yards, driveways and kerbsides crossed by vehicles need deeper bearing bars and closer centers. Classes are referenced to EN 124 — A15 for foot traffic through D400 for carriageways — and we produce the grid to the class you name.
Do you supply frames with the grids?
Yes — grids, frames and fixings ship as one package from one quote, so a single delivery covers the whole gully. Frames are sourced companion items supplied alongside our panels; the grids themselves are cut and banded in our own workshop.
