EN 124 explained
What EN 124 Gully Grating Load Classes Mean
EN 124 is the European standard that groups gully tops and covers by the traffic they can carry. C250 and D400 are the load classes engineers most often specify for steel gully grating. We explain the honest position here, and we produce to it.
What EN 124 is
EN 124 is the European Standard for gully tops and manhole covers for vehicular and pedestrian areas. Its load classes — from pedestrian grades up to carriageway grades — tell a specifier what traffic the gully grating can carry.
Scope — gully and kerbside drainage
C250 gully grating suits kerbside and gully areas where occasional car traffic can pass over the cover. D400 gully grating is the class for carriageways and areas with regular car traffic. Both are produced on our in-house lines.
Key points for procurement
State the EN 124 load class and the frame opening on your drawing. We confirm the class we can produce to, match bar size and spacing to it, and ship DoC, MTC and test reports with the order.
Compliance table
C250 Gully Grating Requirements vs Our Produce-to Position
We produce to standards — we do not claim certifications we do not hold. Here is how each EN 124 gully grating requirement maps to our manufacturing position.
| Requirement | What it asks | Our produce-to position |
|---|---|---|
| EN 124 load class | Gully tops and covers grouped by the traffic they carry | C250 and D400 classes produced to EN 124; the class is confirmed at quoting |
| Frame and cover seating | Cover sits level in its frame under traffic | Panels and frames made together so they seat and lock first time |
| Bar geometry and pitch | Open area for water flow, bar spacing matched to the class | Bearing bar size and spacing matched to the class and the flow area |
| Hot-dip galvanizing | Corrosion protection for road and kerb environments | HDG to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461; coating thickness sampled per batch |
| Compliance documents | Traceable paperwork for the project file | DoC per ISO 17050 with every order; MTC EN 10204 Type 3.1 on request |
Not sure which load class your project needs? Send your drawings — we will spec it inside the 24-hour quote.
Load class options
C250 and D400 Gully Grating Options
Two EN 124 load classes cover most gully grating projects. We match the bearing bar size and pitch to the class, keep the open area for water flow, and issue load class confirmation with your quote. Load values are qualitative here — ask us for the class that fits your project and we confirm it on the drawing review.
| Load class | Where it applies | Our produce-to approach |
|---|---|---|
| C250 | Kerbside and gully areas with occasional car traffic | Bars and pitch matched to the class on our in-house lines; panel cut and banded to your drawing |
| D400 | Carriageways and areas with regular car traffic | Heavier bearing bars and closer centers; frame and cover matched for the trench |
| Per project | Class set by the engineer in the specification | Load class confirmed at quoting; third-party test reports arranged on request |
How we support you
Produce to the Standard, Documents in Hand
Confirm your standard combo
Tell us the load class and version — C250 or D400 per EN 124, A123 coating. We confirm we can produce to it and quote the full document set.
Test on request
Third-party sampling and testing arranged for the agreed batch before shipping — reports issued to the project file.
DoC + MTC with the order
Every order ships with a Declaration of Conformity per ISO 17050, an MTC to EN 10204 Type 3.1 and a factory inspection report.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you provide compliance and DoC documents with a C250 gully grating order?
Yes. Every order ships with a Declaration of Conformity prepared per ISO 17050 for the destination market, an MTC to EN 10204 Type 3.1 and a factory inspection report. Test reports for the agreed batch are supplied on request.
What is the difference between producing to EN 124 and third-party certification?
Producing to a standard means gully covers and frames are manufactured and inspected to that standard's requirements. Certification is a separate third-party audit program. We state what we produce to and back it with documents and on-request testing — we do not claim certifications we do not hold.
What are your sample and production timelines?
Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Quote within 24 hours.
