BS 4592 explained
What BS 4592 Means for Steel Grating
BS 4592 is the British Standard series for industrial flooring, walkways and stair treads in steel. It sets out geometry, material and load requirements for access grating on UK projects, with drainage covers commonly referenced alongside BS EN 124 classes — so a BS EN 124 grating spec and a BS 4592 flooring spec can sit in the same drawing package. We explain the honest position here, and we produce to it.
What BS 4592 is
BS 4592 is the British Standard covering steel flooring, walkways and stair treads in industrial buildings. The series defines panel types, load cases for pedestrian and maintenance traffic, and finishing requirements for access grating.
Scope — platforms and drainage
The series applies to load-bearing grating floors and stair treads. In drainage work, covers are commonly specified against BS EN 124 load classes, so one project can call up both standards for a single gully grating installation.
Key points for procurement
Call out the standard edition, the load case and the finish on your drawings. We confirm we can produce to the requirement and ship DoC, MTC and test reports with the order.

BS 4592 Requirements vs Our Produce-to Position
We produce to standards — we do not claim certifications we do not hold. Here is how each BS 4592 project requirement maps to our manufacturing position.
| Requirement | What it asks | Our produce-to position |
|---|---|---|
| BS 4592 panel geometry | Flooring, walkway and stair tread dimensions per the series | Produced to BS 4592 on our in-house weld and press lines, cut and banded to your drawings |
| Load cases | Pedestrian and maintenance loads per the standard's tables | Bar size and spacing matched to the specified load case; load table issued with the quote |
| Stair treads and nosing | Tread depth, serration and edge details | Treads produced with serrated or plain surface, banded and end-plated per your drawing |
| Hot-dip galvanizing | Corrosion protection for outdoor and wet areas | HDG to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461; coating thickness sampled per batch |
| Compliance documents | Traceable paperwork for the project file | DoC per ISO 17050 with every order; MTC EN 10204 Type 3.1 and test reports on request |
Not sure which combination your project needs? Send your drawings — we will spec it inside the 24-hour quote.

Load Ratings Sit With the Panel
Even when BS 4592 leads the specification, the grating panel carries its own load rating. Tell us the span and the live load — we match bar size and spacing and issue load tables with your quote.
| Duty | Typical live load | Our produce-to approach |
|---|---|---|
| Standard duty | Pedestrian and light maintenance loads | Bars 20×3 mm upward, spacing 30 / 40 / 60 mm per BS 4592 practice |
| Heavy duty | Forklift and wheel traffic | Thicker bars and closer centers per the heavy case in the series |
| Per project | Live load and span given by the engineer | Load table and calculation sheet issued with your quote |
How we support you
Produce to the Standard, Documents in Hand
Confirm your standard combo
Tell us the standard and version — BS 4592 panels, BS EN 124 covers, A123 coating. We confirm we can produce to it and quote the full document set.
Test on request
Third-party sampling and testing arranged for the agreed batch before shipping — reports issued to the project file.
DoC + MTC with the order
Every order ships with a Declaration of Conformity per ISO 17050, an MTC to EN 10204 Type 3.1 and a factory inspection report.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you provide compliance and DoC documents with a BS 4592 grating order?
Yes. Every order ships with a Declaration of Conformity prepared per ISO 17050 for the destination market, an MTC to EN 10204 Type 3.1 and a factory inspection report. Test reports for the agreed batch are supplied on request.
What is the difference between producing to BS 4592 and third-party certification?
Producing to a standard means panels, treads and covers are manufactured and inspected to that standard's requirements. Certification is a separate third-party audit program. We state what we produce to and back it with documents and on-request testing — we do not claim certifications we do not hold.
What are your sample and production timelines?
Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Quote within 24 hours.
