MBG 531 explained
What ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 Means for Steel Grating
ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 is the US industry manual for standard-duty steel bar grating — the reference most American project specs call out. We explain the requirements here, and we produce to them. If your drawings simply say "NAAMM grating," MBG 531 is the standard-duty manual those panels are usually read against, and MBG 532 is its heavy-duty counterpart.
What MBG 531 is
ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 is the Metal Bar Grating manual published by NAAMM under ANSI procedures. It sets bearing bar and cross bar practice, designations such as 19W4, fabrication details and tolerances for standard-duty grating. The current edition is MBG 531-24; earlier editions such as MBG 531-88 still appear in older project files.
Scope — standard duty
MBG 531 covers standard-duty bar grating: platforms, walkways, trench covers and stair treads under pedestrian and light maintenance loads. Its heavy-duty sibling, MBG 532-24, covers thicker bars and closer spacing for wheel and forklift traffic.
Key points for procurement
Designations, bar size, spacing and load tables come from the manual. We match the called-out designation, produce on our in-house lines, and issue load data and documents with the order.

MBG 531 Requirements vs Our Produce-to Position
We produce to standards — we do not claim certifications we do not hold. Here is how each ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 project requirement maps to our manufacturing position.
| Requirement | What it asks | Our produce-to position |
|---|---|---|
| MBG 531 designation (e.g. 19W4) | Bearing bar depth and cross bar spacing per the manual | Produced to the called-out designation on our in-house weld and press lines |
| Bar size & spacing | Bars 20×3 mm upward, spacing 30 / 40 / 60 mm | Cut to your drawings; cross bar pitch matched to the designation |
| Standard vs heavy duty | MBG 531 for standard loads, MBG 532 for wheel traffic | Standard panels per MBG 531-24; heavier bars per MBG 532-24 practice on request |
| Hot-dip galvanizing | Coating for outdoor panels and treads | HDG to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461; coating thickness sampled per batch |
| Fabrication details | Cutting, banding, toe plates and edge treatment | Cut and banded to drawings; toe plates and nosing as specified |
| Compliance documents | Traceable paperwork for the project file | DoC per ISO 17050 with every order; MTC EN 10204 3.1 and test reports on request |

How we support you
Produce to the Standard, Documents in Hand
Confirm your standard combo
Tell us the edition — MBG 531-24, or an earlier reference such as MBG 531-88 — plus the bar designation and coating. We confirm we can produce to it and quote the full document set.
Test on request
Third-party sampling and testing arranged for the agreed batch before shipping — reports issued to the project file.
DoC + MTC with the order
Every order ships with a Declaration of Conformity per ISO 17050, an MTC to EN 10204 Type 3.1 and a factory inspection report.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you provide compliance and DoC documents with an ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 grating order?
Yes. Every order ships with a Declaration of Conformity prepared per ISO 17050 for the destination market, an MTC to EN 10204 Type 3.1 and a factory inspection report. Load data and coating thickness results are supplied on request.
What is the difference between producing to MBG 531 and third-party certification?
Producing to a standard means panels are manufactured and inspected to that standard's requirements. Certification is a separate third-party audit program. We state what we produce to and back it with documents and on-request testing — we do not claim certifications we do not hold.
What are your sample and production timelines?
Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Quote within 24 hours.
