Duty classes

Steel Grating Platform by Duty: Access, Working, Mezzanine

A platform is a floor people stand on, not a route they pass over. That single difference drives every specification on this page: the load framing, the support spacing on your steel grid, the bearing bar that spans it, and the toe plate that closes the open edge. Whether your drawing says steel grating platform, bar grating platform or metal grating platform, the panel family is the same — the duty class is what we quote against.

How it is framed

Framing a Working Platform: Supports, Panels, Toe Plates

support spacing

1 · Set the support grid

Start from the steel you already have. Bearing bars span the short direction across the supports, so the support spacing on your grid — not a catalog page — decides the bar. Tighten the grid and the bar size drops; widen it and the bar steps up.

bay span supports / beams

2 · Fill the bays

Panels are cut to the bay and banded all round — up to 1.25 m wide and 6 m long, bearing bars from 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm on 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers, serrated or plain. One order can mix duties: heavy bays over the staging area, lighter bays at the rail.

toe plate banded panel edge

3 · Close the edges

Every open side of a working platform gets a toe plate, and every panel gets fixed down. Toe plates and clips are sourced companion items we quote alongside the panels as their own line items — matched to the spec, supplied on the same shipment, with the fixing layout in the order documents.

Why specify a platform deck

Safe, Load-Rated, Made to Size

Load-rated for a floor people stand on

One-piece panels spread foot, tool and cart loads across the full bay instead of point-loading a sheet. Specify by span and duty class, not by guesswork — load and span tables come with your quote, and test data is available per batch on request.

Anti-slip by geometry, serrated or plain

Serrated bearing bars put a tooth profile under the boot; plain bars give a smooth deck for covered dry interiors. Either way the open mesh sheds water, ice, oil and debris straight through the floor — the working surface stays visible and drains itself.

Made to size, galvanized or stainless

Bays cut and banded to your beam grid, with an MTC EN 10204 3.1 for every heat and free drawing review inside the 24-hour quote. Hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 as standard, or SS304 / SS316 where the environment demands it.

Metal options

Metal Grating Platform Options: Steel Grid Deck to Stainless

A metal grating platform is specified by two decisions — the deck construction and the metal in it. Every option below comes off our own lines or our stainless line, in the same specification envelope: bearing bars 20×3 to 100×8 mm, spacing 30 / 40 / 60 mm, panels up to 1.25 m wide and 6 m long.

Welded steel grid deck

The default bar grating platform: electro-forged bearing and cross bars fused at every intersection. The joint cannot work loose under repeated traffic, which is why it carries working platforms and mezzanine floors.

Welded steel grating →

Press-locked close mesh

Cross bars mechanically pressed into notched bearing bars — no weld heat, no distortion, mesh down to 11 / 11 mm. The fine floor for platforms where small parts or tools must not fall through.

Press-locked grating →

Stainless platform grating

SS304 for food and chemical washdown, SS316 for chloride exposure — same bar ranges and spacings as the carbon steel lines, supplied with the same MTC EN 10204 3.1 documentation.

Stainless steel grating →

Heavy-duty platform deck

Taller bearing bars on closer centers where pallet trucks and wheeled loads cross the platform. Specify it bay by bay — only the loaded bays need the heavy spec.

Applications

Where Steel Platform Grating Works

Anywhere a floor has to carry people, drain itself and let light and ventilation through — that is platform grating territory.

Plant access & inspection platforms

Light decks around tanks, silos and ducting for rounds and gauge reads.

Mezzanine floors

Storage and packing levels above the plant floor — bays cut to the beam grid.

Pipe-rack & maintenance platforms

Working levels over process lines, valve stands and conveyor galleries.

Offshore & marine platforms

Salt-exposed decks in SS316 or hot-dip galvanized steel — see the marine section.

Marine exposure

Offshore Platform Grating in Marine Exposure

Offshore platform grating lives in salt spray, washdown and condensation — an environment that picks the metal for you. Hot-dip galvanized carbon steel holds up in drier topside and sheltered areas; where spray, deluge and chloride are constant, the honest answer is SS316, and it is the answer we quote.

Our stainless line runs the same specification envelope as the carbon steel lines — bearing bars from 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm on 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers — so a platform drawing can mix galvanized bays and SS316 bays without changing geometry. Every heat arrives with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in, and panels leave with documentation.

We produce to the standard your project names and supply reports on request — we do not claim offshore class approvals we do not hold. See 316 stainless options → · Offshore grating page →

Materials & test documents

Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
  • Factory inspection report with every shipment
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the lead time for a steel grating platform order?

Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.

Do you make the toe plates and clips as well?

No — toe plates, fixing clips and support frames are sourced companion items we supply alongside our panels, matched to the panel specification and quoted as their own line items. What we make in-house are the grating panels themselves: welded, press-locked and stainless lines under one roof.

How is platform grating shipped and priced?

Shipped worldwide from Tianjin Port — FOB Tianjin as standard, EXW or CIF negotiable. Pricing is itemized per m² or per ton in your quote; we do not publish a fixed price list.
