The Complete Walkway Grating Specification Sheet

Every line an engineer or buyer needs to write a walkway grating spec — construction, mesh, panel envelope, materials, finishes and edge details. These are the ranges our four product lines actually build to; anything inside them is a standard order, not a special.

Construction & geometry

ParameterSpecification range
Bearing bar20×3 mm to 100×8 mm, plain or serrated
Bearing bar spacing30 / 40 / 60 mm centers (welded line)
Close mesh optionDown to 11 / 11 mm (press-locked line)
Cross barTwisted square or round, per specification
Panel widthUp to 1.25 m
Panel lengthUp to 6 m — cut to size to your drawings
Stock designation19W4 and custom equivalents

Bearing bars run across the span: state your support direction on the drawing so bars carry load the short way.

Materials, finishes & edges

ParameterSpecification options
Material gradesQ235B carbon steel · SS304 / SS316 stainless
Surface finishBlack (uncoated) or painted
Hot-dip galvanizedASTM A123 / ISO 1461, included in lead time
Walking surfaceSerrated or plain bearing bars
Edge bandingWelded band to spec — flush or checkered
Notching & cutoutsPipes, kerbs and obstructions cut per drawing
FixingsClips and fixings supplied alongside panels

Dimensional tolerances are stated per configuration on your order confirmation — we do not quote a single blanket figure for every bar size.

Load data, weight tables and coating reports — provided with your quote

Load and deflection tables only mean something against your span and load case, so the deeper tables are issued per configuration, not published as one generic sheet. Ask in your RFQ and your quote comes back with:

  • Load and weight tables for your exact bar size, spacing and span
  • Spec sheet with test data included — certified & tested, reports on request
  • Galvanized coating thickness report for HDG orders
  • Installation drawings and fixing layout, included with the order

How to write a walkway grating spec

Five Lines Make a Complete Walkway Grating Specification

Most specification mistakes happen before any steel is cut: load applied the wrong way, or mesh chosen for the wrong traffic. Write these five lines and any grating maker can quote — our engineers check them for free inside the 24-hour quote.

bearing bars = span cross bars edge banding clear span load

Line drawing of what the five lines describe: bearing bars across the span, cross bars tying them, banding closing the edges.

1

Span and support direction

Clear span between supports, and which way the supports run. Bearing bars must sit across the span — the single most common spec error we catch on drawings.

2

Load: uniform, point or wheel

State the load type and value, not just "heavy duty". Uniform load spreads across bars; a point or wheel load lands on one — the bar size that follows is completely different.

3

Mesh opening

30 / 40 / 60 mm centers for open plant walkways that must drain and self-clean; down to 11 / 11 mm close mesh where heels, debris or small tools must not pass through.

4

Bar size, material grade and process

Bearing bar from 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm, in Q235B, SS304 or SS316; welded or press-locked construction. The grade follows the environment — washdown and marine duty justify stainless.

5

Finish, edges and panel sizes

Black or hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461; serrated or plain surface; banded edges; panels cut from the 1.25 m × 6 m envelope to fit your route, not the other way round.

Spec sheets with test data included

The full walkway grating specs you see above, extended with load and weight data for your configuration — issued with your quote, not after you commit.

Grating specs with MTC 3.1

Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate checked at goods-in, and an EN 10204 Type 3.1 MTC travels with your order.

Walkway grating, made to fit

Custom-sized panels cut and banded to your drawings from the full spec range above — small trial orders welcome, free drawing review inside the 24-hour quote.

Where these specs are used

The Same Spec Sheet, Four Walkway Duties

The specification lines do not change from duty to duty — the values you put in them do. Typical settings our walkway specs serve:

Plant & maintenance walkways

Daily foot traffic: mid-range bars, 30 / 40 mm centers, serrated surface, HDG finish.

Elevated catwalks

Long clear spans: heavier bearing bars specified against span, not against habit.

Roof access routes

Weather exposure written into line five: HDG to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 as standard.

Public & pedestrian runs

Heel-safe duty: 11 / 11 mm close mesh on the press-locked line, plain surface.

Specs you can verify

The Documents Behind Every Specified Panel

A specification is only as good as the paperwork that proves it. Here is what a specified walkway grating order leaves our mill with — and how production verifies it along the way.

Ships with your order

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
  • Factory inspection report for the released batch
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
  • Installation drawings and fixing layout, bolted assembly

Five-stage QC against your spec

  • MTC verification at goods-in — grade and heat match your spec line four
  • First-article check of bar size, spacing and banding before the run starts
  • Joint inspection with visual sampling on every panel — ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531 reference practice
  • Coating thickness sampling on galvanized batches — ASTM A123 / ISO 1461
  • Final inspection and report before release to packing

Standards & compliance

Specified to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request

ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531

Walkway panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with joint inspection written into the five-stage QC plan.

ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG

The galvanized finish on spec line five, checked by coating-thickness sampling on every galvanized batch before release.

CE & SGS tested

Certified & tested, reports on request — spec sheets with test data included, so you can verify rather than trust.

FAQ

Walkway Grating Specification Questions

What walkway grating specifications do I need to order?

Five lines cover it: clear span and support direction, the load it must carry (uniform or point loads, plus any wheels), the mesh opening, the bearing bar size and material grade, and the finish and edge details. Send your span and load data and we confirm the full specification inside the 24-hour quote.

Can I get load tables and test data with my walkway grating?

Yes — spec sheets with test data are included, and certification and test reports are available on request. Load and weight tables for your exact configuration are provided with your quote, and every order ships with an MTC to EN 10204 Type 3.1 plus a factory inspection report.

What is the lead time for walkway grating ordered to a specification?

Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.
