What “Diamond Safety Grating” Usually Means — and What We Build

Search the term and you will meet two different products. Raised-diamond tread plate is a solid sheet — no openings, water stays on top. Open safety grating is bearing bars and openings — water, ice and debris fall through. Here is how they really differ, and which line runs in our own workshop.

How Each Safety Surface Works Underfoot

1 · The diamond lug pattern

On tread plate, the diamond is a raised lug rolled into solid sheet. It interrupts the sole on a closed surface — strong underfoot, but nothing drains through, and the lugs polish down over years of traffic.

2 · Serrated bearing-bar tops

Our equivalent for the same duty: teeth cut into the top edge of every bearing bar, so the sole meets a row of edges instead of a flat bar. Works wet or oily, and the geometry cannot peel off like a coating.

3 · Close mesh underfoot

Press-locked panels can be built at 11 / 11 mm centers: so many narrow bars share the foot that pressure spreads, openings stay too small for most footwear, and the floor still drains.

Is diamond safety grating the same as tread plate?

Usually, yes. In trade language a diamond safety grating is most often tread plate — a solid sheet with a raised diamond lug pattern rolled in, also sold as checker plate. What we build in-house is open bar grating, so tread plate is not a stocked line for us: solid or composite panels are quoted per project, to your drawings.

What open grating gives a slip-resistant safety floor?
