Terminology & process
Press-Welded, Forge-Welded, Electro-Forged — One Panel, Several Names
"Press welded" is a trade name, not a separate product. It belongs to the forge-welded family of grating: panels whose bearing bars and cross bars are resistance-welded under pressure into one solid sheet. Regional catalogs, stock lists and older drawings circulate the same panel under several names — the name you search and the name on your drawing may differ. We quote either way.
The name map — what each term actually means
| Name you may see | What it refers to | Same panel as press-welded? |
|---|---|---|
| Press-welded grating | Trade name for grating whose joints are formed by resistance welding under pressure — the "press" is electrode pressure, not a locking press | Yes — this page's product |
| Forge welded grating | The joint-family name: bearing and cross bars forged together at every intersection, no filler wire, no clips | Yes — the same family, common on drawings |
| Electro-forged grating | The machine-level name for the same process — intersections resistance-forged electrically in one pass | Yes — see the process page for the physics |
| Pressure-welded grating | An older descriptive term for the same welded joint, still met in legacy specifications | Yes — same family |
| Press-locked grating | A different process: cross bars mechanically pressed into notched bearing bars, no welding at all | No — closest mesh, no weld heat |
| Swage-locked grating | A different process again: cross bars swaged through pre-punched bearing bars | No — fine transverse stiffness |
How the forming processes compare
| Dimension | Press-Welded | Press-Locked | Swage-Locked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forming principle | Every bearing-bar / cross-bar intersection resistance-forged under pressure | Cross bars mechanically pressed into notched bearing bars — no welding | Cross bars swaged through pre-punched bearing bars |
| Load behavior | High load capacity at wide spans; joints cannot work loose | Very uniform load distribution; suited to pedestrian traffic | High transverse stiffness; holds fine bars firmly |
| Mesh range | 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers | Down to 11 / 11 mm close mesh | Dense patterns; depends on bar selection |
| Panel flatness | Flat panels straight off the line | Extremely flat — no weld heat, no distortion | Flat; depends on bar tolerances |
| Typical use | Platforms, walkways, trench covers, guardrails | Municipal trench, tree pits, facades, fine floors | Architectural and fine-mesh flooring |
| Our lines | In-house — electro-forging resistance-welding line | In-house — press-lock machine | Assessed per project on our press line |

How the joint is made
Pressure and Current: The Resistance-Weld Behind the Name
1 · The resistance-welded joint
Bearing bars and cross bars are clamped between electrodes; pressure and a controlled current forge each intersection into a single solid joint. No filler wire, no clips — nothing to work loose under load.
2 · Why "press" means pressure
In press-welded grating the press is the clamping force that forges a welded joint. In press-locked grating a press instead drives cross bars into notches — a mechanical lock with no weld. One word of difference, two processes.
3 · Hot-dip galvanizing
Welded panels go to a certified galvanizing partner near our mill for ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 hot-dip galvanizing — typically 2–3 days, already counted inside your production window.
Why specify press-welded
Why Buyers Specify Press Welded Grating
Flat-top, high-load panels
A flat walking plane with open mesh that sheds water and debris, backed by one-piece welded construction that carries foot and wheel loads across the full panel. Load tables on request.
In-house lines, factory-direct FOB
Press welded grating is welded on our own electro-forging line — no trading-desk markup. Export pricing FOB Tianjin as standard, EXW or CIF negotiable, itemized quote on request.
Custom sizes, samples first
Panels cut and banded to your drawings — bar sizes, spacing and finishes per spec. Samples in 5–7 days, small trial orders welcome, quote within 24 hours with free drawing review.
Applications
Where Press Welded Grating Works
The default panel wherever people or wheels meet steel flooring: welded joints hold load at any span, and the open mesh drains rain, ice and debris.
Industrial platforms & mezzanines
Load-rated flooring for maintenance platforms, mezzanines and plant decks.
Walkways & catwalks
Elevated access routes that stay visible, drained and safe underfoot.
Trench & drainage covers
Covers for trench drains and gullies — heel-proof press-locked mesh optional.
Stair treads & guardrails
Welded treads with serrated or plain surfaces; matching guardrail infill panels.

Materials & test documents
Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531
Welded panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with weld inspection on our five-stage QC plan.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
Galvanized coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before panels are released.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is press welded grating the same as press-locked grating?
No. Press welded grating is the trade name for pressure-welded (forge-welded, electro-forged) grating — every bearing-bar and cross-bar intersection is resistance-forged into one solid panel. Press-locked grating is a different process: cross bars are mechanically pressed into notched bearing bars, with no welding at all.
What is the lead time for press welded grating?
Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.
How is press welded grating shipped and priced?
Shipped worldwide from Tianjin Port — FOB Tianjin as standard, EXW or CIF negotiable. Pricing is itemized per m² or per ton in your quote; small trial orders are welcome and we do not publish a fixed price list.
