Bar depth in context
Where a 1 1/4 Inch Bearing Bar Sits in the Range
Buyers asking for 1 steel grating, 1 1/4 bar grating or 48 wide bar grating are all describing depth and width choices inside one production range. Our bearing bars run from 20×3 mm up to 100×8 mm — here is how the common imperial depths map onto it.
| Bar depth (imperial) | Metric equivalent | Typical duty | In our range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 in | 25.4 mm | Light pedestrian walkways, access platforms, shallow trench covers | Yes — ~25 mm class sections |
| 1 1/4 in | 31.75 mm | Standard industrial walkways and platforms — the everyday plant flooring depth | Yes — ~30 mm class; exact section per quote |
| 1 1/2 in | 38.1 mm | Longer clear spans between supports, heavier foot traffic | Yes — ~40 mm class sections |
| 2 in and deeper | 50.8 mm and up | Heavy-duty decks subject to forklift and wheel loads | Yes — up to 100×8 mm; see heavy-duty bar grating |
Depths above are plain unit conversions (1 in = 25.4 mm exactly). Duty descriptions are typical practice, not load ratings — load tables for your clear span are provided with your quote.
Not sure which depth your spans need? Send your drawings — we will spec it inside the 24-hour quote.
Designation anatomy
Reading 1 1/4 on a Grating Drawing
1 · The number is the bar depth
1 1/4 inch measures the depth (height) of the bearing bar — the flat member standing on edge that carries the load — not the mesh opening. Thickness and bar spacing are separate choices: thickness runs 3 mm to 8 mm, spacing 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers.
2 · Convert once, then trust the drawing
One inch is 25.4 mm exactly, so 1 1/4 inch is 31.75 mm — the ~30 mm class of our metric sections. Specify in inches or millimetres; we confirm the nearest running section in your quote so nothing is rounded twice.
3 · The 48 inch width question
A 48 inch wide panel is 1.22 m. Our panels run up to 1.25 m wide and 6 m long, so 48 wide bar grating is a standard width for us — cut to size either way, with banding on the cut edges where the drawing calls for it.
Why specify 1 1/4
Why Buyers Specify 1 1/4 Bar Grating From the Mill
Full size range, any quantity
1 1/4 inch depth and 48 inch width both sit inside one production range, so depth steps and panel sizes do not split your order across suppliers. Small trial lots and container loads come off the same lines.
Cut to your sizes, with sizing help
Panels are cut and banded to your drawings — imperial or metric. Free panel sizing help is part of the quote, and a sample panel ships in 5–7 working days so you can check fit before the production run.
Mill made, certified & tested
Q235B carbon steel or SS304 / SS316 stainless, each heat entering with its mill test certificate verified. Galvanized panels run ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 referenced practice — reports on request.
Applications
The Duty a 1 1/4 Inch Depth Serves
This is the standard industrial walkway and platform depth: stiff enough for everyday plant flooring at sensible support spacing, without paying for steel a lighter duty never uses.
Industrial walkways
Plant access routes and elevated walkways — the classic duty for this depth class.
Platforms & mezzanines
Open-mesh flooring over steel framing; sheds water and debris under regular foot traffic.
Maintenance access & catwalks
Access around tanks, conveyors and equipment where panels are lifted in by hand.
Trench & pit covers
Covers that stay stiff under foot traffic while keeping the trench open to flow.

Materials & test documents
Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages, and the reason a size lot can be traced back to the steel it came from. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531
Welded panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with weld inspection on our five-stage QC plan.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
Galvanized coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before panels are released.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What does 1 1/4 mean in bar grating?
It is the depth (height) of the bearing bar — the flat steel member that carries the load — not the mesh opening. 1 1/4 inches equals 31.75 mm, which maps to the ~30 mm class of our metric bearing bar sections; the exact depth and thickness combination is confirmed with your quote.
Can you supply 48 inch wide bar grating panels?
Yes. A 48 inch wide panel measures 1.22 m, and our panels run up to 1.25 m wide and 6 m long. Panels are cut to your sizes, so imperial and metric drawings both work — state your preferred units and we confirm the nearest section in the quote.
Are load tables available for 1 1/4 bar grating?
Load and span tables are provided with your quote rather than published as fixed numbers, because capacity depends on your clear span, bar spacing and support layout. Send the span and the loading you expect — our engineers reply within 24 hours.
