AASHTO explained
What AASHTO Means for Steel Grating
AASHTO writes the design specifications used on US highway and bridge structures. For grating, the AASHTO context is the design-load framework the engineer applies — the panel is then produced to that load case.
What AASHTO is
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials writes the design specifications used on US highway and bridge projects — including the live-load models, such as HL-93, that govern deck and walkway structures.
Scope — design loads on public works
The AASHTO context enters a grating project through the load case the engineer sets: panel size, bar spacing and steel section are sized to the design load, not the other way around.
Key points for procurement
Bridge and highway specs usually name the grating reference practice and the coating. We produce to ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 with ASTM A123 galvanizing, and document each lot for the project file.

AASHTO Requirements vs Our Produce-to Position
We produce to standards — we do not claim certifications we do not hold. Here is how each AASHTO project requirement maps to our manufacturing position.
| Requirement | What it asks | Our produce-to position |
|---|---|---|
| AASHTO design-load framework | Live-load model set by the specifying agency | Panels sized to your stated load and span; load tables issued with the quote |
| Grating reference practice | Panel geometry per the project specification | Produced to ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 reference practice on our in-house lines |
| Galvanizing | Coating for outdoor bridge exposure | Hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461; thickness sampled per batch |
| Compliance documents | Traceable paperwork for the project file | DoC per ISO 17050 with every order; MTC EN 10204 3.1; test reports on request |
| Third-party verification | Independent check of the agreed lot | Third-party testing arranged on request; factory audits welcome |

Load class options
Sizing Panels to AASHTO Load Cases
The design load drives the panel. We size bars, spacing and span to the load case you state and provide the supporting load tables with your quote.
| Load context | Design approach |
|---|---|
| Pedestrian walkways on bridge structures | Uniform walkway load applied to span; bar spacing 30 / 40 / 60 mm |
| Maintenance and inspection platforms | Combined point and distributed loads; panel sized to deflection limits |
| Vehicle-adjacent drainage gratings | Wheel load cases; heavier bars or closer centers per the project spec |
How we support you
Produce to the Standard, Documents in Hand
Confirm your standard combo
Tell us the standard and version — AASHTO load case, MBG 531 panels, A123 coating. We confirm we can produce to it and quote the full document set.
Test on request
Third-party sampling and testing arranged for the agreed batch before shipping — reports issued to the project file.
DoC + MTC with the order
Every order ships with a Declaration of Conformity per ISO 17050, an MTC to EN 10204 Type 3.1 and a factory inspection report.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you provide compliance and DoC documents for AASHTO project grating?
Yes. Every order ships with a Declaration of Conformity prepared per ISO 17050 for the destination market, an MTC to EN 10204 Type 3.1 and a factory inspection report. Third-party test reports on request.
What is the difference between producing to AASHTO and third-party certification?
Producing to a standard means panels are manufactured and inspected to that standard's requirements. Certification is a separate third-party audit program. We state what we produce to and back it with documents and on-request testing — we do not claim certifications we do not hold.
What are your sample and production timelines?
Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Quote within 24 hours.
