Surface comparison

Plain Top vs Serrated Top vs Close-Mesh Plain

"Grating plain" is a surface specification, not a separate product: the same flat bar panels, the same spans and loads, with a smooth top instead of teeth. Here is where each surface earns its place — stated honestly.

Dimension Plain Top Serrated Top Close-Mesh Plain
Top profileSmooth, flat bearing-bar surface — the classic flat bar grating topTeeth formed along the top of each bearing barSmooth tops, openings down to 11 / 11 mm
Underfoot behaviorDependable footing on dry, clean floorsThe conventional pick where footing is wet or oilyHeel-proof — suited to dress shoes and pedestrian decks
CleanabilityHose-downs and sweeps clear the smooth top — no crevices to hold soilTeeth need brushing; residue can sit between themSmooth bars clean fast; fine openings can hold grit

Surface & finish

One Geometry, Two Tops, Three Finishes

smooth top edge — nothing to pack or catch bearing bar cross-section plain (non serrated) bar

1 · Plain top

The smooth original: the full bar cross-section carries the load, and the walking surface stays flat so water, dust and snow slide or sweep off instead of lodging.

teeth along the bar top serrated bar (for wet / oily zones)

2 · Serrated top

The honest alternative when floors stay wet or oily: teeth engage boot soles by geometry. We make both surfaces from the same panel range — see serrated grating.

3 · Finishes on plain tops

Black mill finish for painting on site, hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 via our certified partner, or SS304 / SS316 mill finish where the smooth top is the point.

Why specify plain

Why Engineers Specify Plain Flat Bar Grating

Full flat bar grating specs

Plain tops run across the whole size range — bearing bars from 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm at 30, 40 or 60 mm centers, panels up to 1.25 m × 6 m, welded or press-locked. Free flat bar grating help from the engineers who make them.

Custom flat bar grating

Stock designations or fully custom panels — cut and banded to your drawings with the surface you mark on them. Drawing review is free and happens inside the 24-hour quote.

Materials with papers

Q235B carbon steel or SS304 / SS316, every heat checked at goods-in. Certified & tested, reports on request — mill test certificates to EN 10204 Type 3.1 come with every order.

Where the smooth top wins

Where Plain Beats Serrated

Serration is one answer to one problem — footing on wet steel. Everywhere else, the smooth top of non serrated grating does the job better, and usually for less work in cleaning.

Hygiene & washdown floors

No crevices to hold soil — a hose or squeegee clears the whole surface. The default surface for food, beverage and pharmaceutical flooring.

Stainless interiors

SS304 / SS316 platforms and mezzanines keep the smooth mill finish visible — teeth would read as industrial even indoors.

Debris slide-off

In dry plants, dust and grit slide or sweep off a flat top instead of settling between teeth — less brushing, cleaner walking lines.

Snow & ice regions

Smooth tops shed snow and melt water through the mesh; serrations can pack with ice where plowing is infrequent.

The honest exception: where the floor stays wet or oily, serrated grating is the conventional choice, and we supply it from the same panel range — see the serrated surface before you decide.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does plain mean in steel grating?

Plain means the bearing bars carry a smooth, flat top with no serrated teeth formed into them. Everything underneath is the same grating geometry: bearing bars from 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm at 30, 40 or 60 mm centers, in welded or press-locked construction.

When should I choose plain grating instead of serrated?

Choose plain tops for hygiene and washdown floors, stainless plant interiors, dry areas where dust should slide off, and snow regions where serrations can pack with ice. For wet or oily zones, serrated grating is the conventional choice — both surfaces are made from the same panel range.

What are the lead time and order terms for plain grating?

Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, hot-dip galvanizing included. Quotes are itemized within 24 hours, FOB Tianjin as standard, and small trial orders are welcome.
