A twisted bar grating panel is ordinary welded grating seen from the cross-bar side: plain bearing bars that span the load, and cold-twisted square cross bars forged across them. Drawings often abbreviate the construction to t bar grating — the "t" naming the twisted cross bar — while the load still runs along the bearing bars; the twist decides what the panel feels and looks like underfoot.

What the word names

In trade speech, twisted bar is the cross bar of welded grating — a square bar cold-twisted along its length. Buyers sometimes say twisted bar grating meaning the whole panel; we map that to a standard welded panel with twisted square cross bars and quote it either way.

Why the bar is twisted

The twist presents four longitudinal edges instead of a flat face: the weld fuses onto edge contact at every joint, and the surface underfoot shows a slim ridge pattern — grip as geometry, plus the sparse, open look welded grating is specified for. No slip rating is claimed; geometry only.

The round alternative

Round cross bars run on the same welded lines and are quoted per specification. They feel smoother underfoot and suit lighter panels and screening; twisted square remains the standard build for platform and walkway duty. Either way, one drawing covers both.

Pitch Frames the Panel — Spacing Carries the Load

Cross-bar pitch is the distance between cross bars, measured across the bearing bars. It sets transverse stiffness, how evenly a wheel load spreads across neighboring bearing bars, and how open the panel reads — it does not set load capacity. That belongs to the bearing bar: its height, thickness and the spacing between bearing bars.

Designations say the same thing in numbers. In a W19-4 style designation, 19 is the bearing-bar spacing in sixteenths of an inch (19/16 in) and 4 is the cross-bar pitch in inches (4 in ≈ 100 mm). Read the second number as the cross-bar story — that is the number this page is about.
