Mass, not duty class
What Makes a Steel Panel Light — and What It Costs You
Lightweight grating is not a different material — it is the same welded steel range tuned for minimum mass. Three levers decide the mass of every panel: the bearing bar section, the bar spacing, and the panel cut. This page works those levers; the duty-class view lives on light duty grating.
| Weight driver | Lightweight Grating | Standard Weight | Heavy-Duty Mass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bearing bar section | Thin bars at the 20×3 mm end of our 20×3 to 100×8 mm range | 25 mm (1 in) class at mid thickness | Deeper, thicker bars toward 100×8 mm |
| Bar spacing | 60 mm centers — maximum open area | 40 mm centers, the general-purpose pitch | 30 mm and closer as loads rise |
| Steel per panel | Least — fewer, thinner bars per square meter | Moderate steel content | Most steel per panel |
| Designed around | Dead-load limits, manual handling, roof retrofits | General platforms, walkways and trench covers | Wheels, pallet trucks, high point loads |
| Span behavior | Shorter unsupported spans — more support framing | Balanced spans and framing | Longest clear spans in the range |
| Handling on site | Panels sized for manual carrying and positioning | Standard two-hand panel handling | Mechanical lifting for the heaviest panels |
| Best next step | Send your dead-load or span limit — section confirmed per quote | See the 1 inch class page | See heavy-duty grating |

How panel mass is built
Mass Equals Steel Content — Three Levers Control It
1 · Bar section
Every millimeter of height and thickness multiplies across all the bars in a panel. Building at the 20×3 mm end of our range keeps the section — and the mass — at the floor of what welded grating can be.
2 · Pitch and open area
At 60 mm centers there are simply fewer bars in each square meter than at 40 or 30 mm — the open area is mass you never had to buy. Trade-off: wider gaps, so check heel and small-object rules before committing.
3 · Grade, finish and cut
Stainless runs the same sections as carbon steel; hot-dip galvanizing adds only a thin coating. Smaller panel cuts split the same mass across more pieces — easier handling, same total steel. Unit-weight tables come with your quote.
An honest note on lighter materials
FRP / GRP composite and aluminium gratings exist and are lighter than any steel panel. We do not make them — our workshop forms steel, and this page stays inside that line: welded and press-locked panels in Q235B, SS304 or SS316. If your project genuinely needs polymer behavior, we would rather tell you than quote around it.
Why buy lightweight grating factory-direct
Why Buyers Order Lightweight Grating From the Mill
Factory pricing, FOB Tianjin
Direct lightweight grating pricing from the workshop that cuts and bands the panels — itemized per m² or per ton, FOB Tianjin as standard, EXW or CIF negotiable. Less steel per panel shows up as a lighter line item.
Full specs, drawings and samples
Full lightweight grating specs and the unit-weight tables ship with your quote, drawings reviewed free inside the 24-hour window. Sample panels in 5–7 working days so you can feel the mass before you commit.
Certified & tested, HDG A123
Certified & tested, reports on request — mill test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 with every order, and hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 referenced practice checked by coating sampling.
Applications
Where Light Steel Panels Pay Off
Weight becomes the buying reason when the structure below, or the people installing, set the limit — not the traffic on top.
Roof walkways & retrofits
Service routes added to existing roofs, where the dead-load budget was set decades ago.
Maintenance access platforms
Panels carried by hand over pumps and plant — no crane day, no rigging crew.
Light mezzanines & catwalks
Older structures with limited reserve capacity — foot traffic only, mass kept to a minimum.
Phased & redeployed access
Temporary walkways that move with the project — lighter panels ship and handle cheaper.
Specifications
Lightweight Grating Specifications

Tables, materials & test documents
Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. The full unit-weight tables for your section are provided with your quote, because the lightest valid panel depends on your spans:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531
Welded panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with weld inspection on our five-stage QC plan.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
Galvanized coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before panels are released.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes steel grating lightweight?
Mass comes from geometry, not from a different material. Thinner and shallower bearing bars toward the 20×3 mm end of our range, wider 60 mm centers that leave more open area, and smaller panel cuts all reduce the steel in each square meter. The exact section is confirmed per quote against your spans and loads.
Do you supply FRP, composite or aluminium grating?
No. Our line is steel only — welded and press-locked panels in Q235B carbon steel or SS304 / SS316 stainless. FRP and composite gratings exist and are genuinely lighter; if your project needs their corrosion or dielectric behavior, a polymer supplier is the better call. For weight savings within steel, thin-section panels from the 20×3 mm end of our range are what we quote.
Can lightweight grating be galvanized, and how fast is delivery?
Yes — panels leave black or hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 referenced practice, with coating thickness checked by sampling. Samples ship in 5–7 working days and production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, galvanizing included.
