Material comparison
Steel Grating Material Comparison
Stainless is not the answer to every wet floor — it is the answer to wet floors that must also stay clean and coating-free. Here is how the four common grating materials compare before you commit.
| Material | Corrosion behavior | Typical environments | Hygiene & cleanability | Relative cost | Surface finish |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q235B carbon steel | Coating-dependent — unprotected steel corrodes in wet service | Dry indoor platforms, warehouse floors | Coating seams trap soil; not for washdown zones | Budget baseline | Black mill finish, primer on request |
| Q235B + hot-dip galvanized | Zinc barrier after fabrication, ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 reference | Outdoor walkways, municipal trench covers | Good outdoors; coating is not made for caustic washdown | Budget plus coating | Hot-dip galvanized after fabrication |
| SS304 stainless | Corrosion-resistant in its own right — no coating to apply or maintain | Food plants, dairies, breweries, general washdown areas | Smooth, flush-cleanable open mesh; nothing to blister or flake | Premium vs coated carbon | Pickled and passivated |
| SS316 stainless | Adds chloride resistance for brine, salts and coastal air | Chemical processing, marine and salt-splash floors | Same cleanability; holds up to salt-based cleaning agents | Highest of the four | Pickled and passivated |

Material traceability
From Heat Number to Hygienic Floor
1 · Verified heats
Every SS304 or SS316 bar arrives with its mill test certificate, and heat numbers are logged at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages — before a single bar is cut.
2 · Certificates with every shipment
We ship mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment — chemical composition and mechanical values traceable heat by heat, so the grade on your floor is the grade you ordered.
3 · Inspected before it ships
First-article check, weld-point inspection and final inspection close the five-stage plan. A factory inspection report and Declaration of Conformity travel with the order.
Environments
The Floors That Ask for Stainless
A stainless floor is bought for a place, not for a price list. Each environment below puts its own demands on the floor — here is what those floors ask for, and how SS grating answers.
Food & beverage plants
SS304 open-mesh floors around processing lines. Daily hose-down and caustic cleaning agents pass straight through the mesh into the drain — no coating to blister, flake or soil the product zone.
Floor demands: flush cleanability, resistance to cleaning chemicals.
Chemical & processing areas
SS316 where chlorides, brine and process chemicals strip zinc coatings in months. The floor keeps its section without any protective layer to inspect, repair or re-apply.
Floor demands: chloride resistance, zero coating maintenance.
Washdown & wet floors
Water, foam and spills drain instantly through the open mesh — no pooled water underfoot. Serrated bearing bars are optional where floors run permanently wet and soapy.
Floor demands: instant drainage, anti-slip underfoot.
Drains below the floor
The stainless system continues under the walking surface: pair SS floor panels with stainless channel drains so floor and drainage are one cleanable line, not two mixed materials.
Floor demands: grating and channel as one material system.
Small solids on the walking surface? Press-locked stainless open-mesh flooring down to 11 / 11 mm keeps debris on top of the floor while liquids still drain — see also close-mesh grating.
Why specify stainless
Why Buyers Specify SS Floor Grating
Corrosion-resistant by grade, not by coating
SS304 for routine washdown, SS316 for chloride service — the corrosion resistance is in the steel itself. Nothing to scratch through, touch up or re-coat after aggressive cleaning.
Any size, any grade, made to spec
Welded or press-locked panels cut and banded to your drawings — panel size, mesh, grade and banding all to specification, with free drawing review inside the 24-hour quote.
Factory-direct, no middlemen
Buy from the workshop that cuts, welds and inspects the panels — FOB Tianjin as standard, itemized quote on request, small trial orders welcome before a full program.

Grades & test documents
Every heat of SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531
Welded stainless panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with weld inspection on our five-stage QC plan.
EN 10204 Type 3.1 material proof
Grade claims backed by mill test certificates — chemical and mechanical values traceable to the heat, not a marketing line.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Which stainless grade should a food plant floor use?
SS304 covers routine washdown in most food and beverage plants. Move up to SS316 where brine, chlorides or salt-based cleaning agents are constant. Both grades ship with mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment, so the grade is traceable heat by heat.
What is the lead time for stainless steel floor grating?
Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.
How do stainless floor panels handle cleaning and small debris?
Open mesh flushes clean in place — water and cleaning solutions drain straight through instead of pooling. Where small solids must not fall through, press-locked close mesh down to 11 / 11 mm keeps debris on the walking surface.
