Quick answer
The Short Answer
A stainless steel grating specification states the grade — SS304 or SS316 — plus bearing bar size, bar spacing, panel size, surface finish and load class. Specify the environment to choose the grade: SS304 for food and most industrial use, SS316 for marine and chemical service. We produce to the same ranges as carbon steel.
Spec guide
What Goes Into a Stainless Steel Grating Specification?
A clean stainless spec answers six questions. Get these down and the quote, the drawing review and the final panel all line up first time.
Grade
SS304 or SS316, chosen from the environment. The grade is the headline of the whole spec and drives the mill test certificate.
Bars & spacing
Bearing bar size, plain or serrated, plus bar spacing. Our stainless range mirrors carbon steel: 20×3 mm up to 100×8 mm, at 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers.
Panel size & load
Panel width up to 1.25 m and length up to 6 m, with the live load and span that set the bar size. Load tables issued with the quote.
Material choice
Which Stainless Grades Are Available — SS304 or SS316?
Two grades cover virtually all stainless grating projects. Both are produced in-house, with mill test certificates on request, and both carry the same geometry range as carbon steel.
SS304
The general-purpose stainless. Strong, clean and corrosion-resistant for food processing, washdown areas, breweries and most industrial platforms. Specify SS304 unless the exposure demands more.
SS316
Adds molybdenum for resistance to chlorides — the pick for marine decks, docks, coastal plants and chemical exposure where pitting is a real risk.
Dimensions
What Bar Sizes and Spans Can Be Specified?
Stainless panels are specified exactly like carbon steel. Our range is published below — no invented numbers, just the sizes our lines actually run.
| Parameter | Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Material grade | SS304 · SS316 | Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1 |
| Bearing bar | 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm | Plain or serrated |
| Bar spacing | 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers | Closer mesh on press-locked panels |
| Cross bar | Twisted square or round | Per specification |
| Panel width | Up to 1.25 m | Cut and banded to your drawings |
| Panel length | Up to 6 m | Longer runs discussed per project |
| Forming process | Welded · press-locked | Both on in-house lines |
| Load class | Per live load and span | Load table issued with your quote |
Load class follows the same thinking as carbon steel: pedestrian loads at 30/40 mm spacing, wheel traffic with thicker bars and closer centers. Load tables & calculators →
Where it works
Where Stainless Steel Grating Earns Its Grade
Stainless grating pays for itself anywhere carbon steel would corrode or where the surface must stay easy to clean. Food and beverage plants, chemical halls, breweries, washdown areas, docks and offshore platforms are the classic homes for SS304 and SS316 panels.
Food & washdown
Open mesh drains washwater and product spill without pooling — SS304 handles the daily cleaning chemicals.
Marine & coastal
Docks, boat decks and offshore platforms — SS316 resists the chloride attack that would pit lesser grades.
Chemical & process
Platforms and trench covers in corrosive process areas, specified grade matched to the exposure.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is stainless steel grating specified the same way as carbon steel?
Yes — the same geometry applies: bearing bar size, spacing, panel width and length, and load class. Stainless only adds the grade choice, SS304 or SS316, which is driven by the environment the panel will live in.
Can you provide material certificates for SS304 or SS316?
Yes. Every heat enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in, and every order ships with an MTC to EN 10204 Type 3.1, a factory inspection report and a Declaration of Conformity per ISO 17050.
What are your sample and production timelines?
Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation. Quote within 24 hours.
