The steel safety matrix
Steel Safety Grating Options: The Material & Geometry Matrix
One safety line, three steels, two geometries. Choose the steel for the environment, the geometry for the hazard, and the construction for the load — then we cut and band it to your drawings.
| Dimension | Q235B + Hot-Dip GalvanizedDefault spec | SS304 Stainless | SS316 Stainless |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safety geometry | Serrated teeth or plain surface; press-locked close mesh for heel-proof zones | Serrated or plain bearing bars | Serrated or plain bearing bars |
| Construction | Welded (electro-forged) or press-locked | Welded or press-locked | Welded |
| Corrosion strategy | Zinc coating to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461, thickness checked per galvanized batch | Corrosion-resistant alloy for frequent washdown and cleaning chemistry | Higher-alloy grade for marine, brine and chloride exposure |
| Typical safety duty | Outdoor ramps, walkways, plant platforms, stair treads | Food and chemical washdown floors, hygiene drainage covers | Coastal plant, dockside and brine-area walkways |
| Bar range | 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm, spacing 30 / 40 / 60 mm, close mesh to 11/11 mm | Same bar range as carbon steel | Same bar range as carbon steel |

How the geometry works
Two Safety Geometries, One Open-Mesh Principle
1 · Serrated teeth
The teeth stand proud of the bearing bar, so a wet or oily sole bears on the crests instead of planing on a flat surface. Water, oil and debris drop straight through the open mesh.
2 · Close mesh
Press-locked panels come down to 11/11 mm openings — small enough that heels, small wheels and tools stay on the walking surface while the panel still sheds water and spillage.
3 · Steel that keeps working
Galvanized safety grating gets a zinc coat to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461; washdown and marine zones move to SS304 or SS316 so the geometry — not rust — defines the walking surface for the life of the panel.

Why specify this line
Why Specifiers Choose Steel Safety Grating from the Mill
Custom steel safety grating, any size
Send a drawing or a sketch — panels come back cut and banded to your openings, in the steel and geometry you picked from the matrix. Drawing review is free inside the 24-hour quote.
Factory-direct, small MOQ
You buy from the workshop that cuts, welds, presses and packs the panels — no middlemen in the chain. Small trial orders are welcome before you commit to a full container.
Built for ramps and heavy duty
Steel safety grating for ramps keeps the tooth crest across the slope while the open mesh drains rain and spillage downhill. Wheel-traffic areas move to thicker bars and closer centers — specify by span, load tables on request.
Applications
Where Steel Safety Grating Works
Wherever people walk on steel that gets wet, greasy or washed down — the safety geometry carries the foot, the steel option answers the environment.
Ramps & access ways
Serrated galvanized safety grating for plant ramps, loading docks and kerb crossings.
Walkways & platforms
Open-mesh floors over plant, platforms and mezzanines — water and ice fall through, not underfoot.
Stairs & escape routes
Serrated treads with nosing options — the safety geometry carried onto every step.
Washdown & marine areas
SS304 for hygiene washdown floors, SS316 for dockside and chloride zones.

Materials & test documents
Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531
Panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with weld and geometry inspection on our five-stage QC plan.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
Galvanized coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before panels are released.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Which steel should safety grating be specified in?
Q235B carbon steel with hot-dip galvanizing is our default steel safety grating for outdoor ramps, walkways and platforms. SS304 serves food and chemical washdown areas, and SS316 is the grade for marine and chloride exposure. All three come serrated or plain, in welded or press-locked construction.
Serrated or close-mesh — which safety geometry do I need?
Serrated teeth stand proud of the bearing bars, so soles bear on the tooth crests in wet or oily zones. Close 11/11 mm mesh keeps heels and small wheels supported where the surface should feel solid underfoot. Both geometries let water and debris fall through the open mesh, and projects often combine them.
How fast can I get steel safety grating samples?
Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, hot-dip galvanizing included. Your itemized quote follows within 24 hours of the free drawing review.
