Steel grating material comparison
Black Is a Finish Word — Here Is the Honest Comparison
Black grating is not a different metal. It is the same Q235B carbon steel we galvanize or leave bare — named for its uncoated mill finish, not for a paint color. This page anchors the uncoated option; the table below shows exactly where it sits against the other three material finishes we run.
| Material | Weather & corrosion behavior | Typical environment | Relative cost | Documentation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uncoated carbon steel Q235B (black) | Bare mill finish; needs shop primer or HDG before weather or wet exposure | Shop fabrication, dry indoor floors, fabricators coating on site | Baseline | MTC EN 10204 3.1 per heat |
| Hot-dip galvanized Q235B | Zinc skin shields the steel core from rain, snow and salt air | Outdoor walkways, trench covers, facades, exterior treads | Baseline plus galvanizing | MTC 3.1 + coating sampling to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 |
| SS304 stainless | Corrosion-resistant without any coating | Food plants, washdown areas, general chemical duty | Premium | MTC EN 10204 3.1 per heat |
| SS316 stainless | Added chloride resistance for harsh exposure | Marine, coastal, chemical process areas | Premium plus | MTC EN 10204 3.1 per heat |
Same family, other finishes: carbon steel bar grating (the grade story) · galvanized bar grating (the workhorse outdoor panel) · Q235 steel grating (the structural grade page).

Terminology, stated plainly
What Black Grating Actually Is — and What It Is Not
1 · Uncoated mill finish
Black steel grating leaves the rolling mill bare. The dark, scaly surface is mill scale from hot rolling — not a black paint layer. We say this plainly because buyers who expect painted panels receive bare steel they can coat themselves.
2 · Fabricated in the black
Cutting, welding, drilling and banding all happen on bare steel — no zinc layer to burn off, no coating to scratch. That is exactly why fabricators order black metal grating: every weld and cut stays clean, then they coat the finished assembly on their own line.
3 · Coated on request, or protected for export
Want it finished before it ships? Shop priming for site painting, or hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 at our certified partner — a 2–3 day cycle already counted inside the production window. Leaving it black? Export oil protection guards bare surfaces on sea freight.
Why order black
Why Buyers Order Black Grating Factory-Direct
Made to spec, any size and grade
Black grating cut and banded to your drawings — 19W4 stock designations or fully custom dimensions, from heavy-duty 100×8 mm bars to fine-mesh panels. Any grade: Q235B carbon steel as standard, SS304 / SS316 on request.
Mill certs + MTC 3.1, traceable
Every batch of black grating ships with traceable mill test certificates. Heat number, grade and chemical analysis follow the steel from the rolling mill to your container — certificates ready to preview before you commit.
No middlemen — factory-direct, FOB
Wholesale black grating straight from the mill: no trading company in the middle, itemized quotes, FOB Tianjin as standard with EXW or CIF negotiable. Small trial orders welcome — you buy factory-direct at any quantity.
Applications
Where Black Grating Is the Right Call
Buyers pick uncoated grating when they — not the factory — control the coating. These are the four situations where bare panels genuinely beat finished ones.
Shop fabrication
Fabricators weld, cut and modify black panels into larger assemblies, then prime and paint the finished unit in one pass.
Dry interiors & plant floors
Indoor platforms and mezzanines where the specifier applies a site paint system matched to the plant color code.
Heavy-duty floors, coated later
Thick-bar heavy duty black grating for wheel and rack loads, with coating scheduled after installation and commissioning.
Stockists & steel traders
Wholesale black metal grating in standard panels for resale — cut, banded and packed to your warehouse spec.
Buying black grating for wet sites or full weather exposure? Uncoated steel rusts outdoors — we will say so and quote the hot-dip galvanized or stainless equivalent instead. Rust-resistance in our black line comes from the coating you choose, not the bare steel.

Materials & test documents
Every heat of Q235B enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Uncoated does not mean undocumented: we issue mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment, and panels leave with documents, not promises:
- Mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment
- Factory inspection report issued with each order
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531
Black panels are produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with weld inspection built into our five-stage QC plan.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
When you order galvanizing with your black panels, coating thickness is checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before release.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What does black grating actually mean — is it painted black?
No. Black grating is the trade term for steel grating in its uncoated mill finish: bare steel straight from the rolling mill, with the dark mill scale still on the surface. Nothing is painted black. If your project needs a coating, shop priming or hot-dip galvanizing is applied on request before shipment.
Do black grating orders include mill test certificates?
Yes. We issue mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment, so the heat number, grade and chemical analysis stay traceable from the mill to your container. Certificates are ready to preview before you commit to production.
How is uncoated grating protected for export and sea freight?
For sea freight, bare surfaces receive export oil protection and panels are packed on steel-strapped pallets or in crates. If you prefer coating before shipment, shop priming or hot-dip galvanizing is available on request — galvanizing adds roughly 2–3 days, already counted inside the production window.
