Steel grating material comparison
Structural Duty Starts With the Steel Grade
"Structural" is a grade and duty question before it is a product question. This page anchors the structural option in our material range: Q235B structural carbon steel run at heavier bar sizes, with the grade traceable from heat number to panel. Where a project specifies painted steel grating — usually a structural coating in place of hot-dip galvanizing — the same panels leave with a specified paint system, and the finish line appears separately in the quote. The table below shows where it sits against the other material routes we run.
| Material | Weather & corrosion behavior | Typical environment | Relative cost | Documentation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Structural carbon steel Q235B | Structural grade; ship black, primed for site painting, or HDG finished | Platforms, mezzanines, wheel-load ramps, structural framing | Baseline | MTC EN 10204 3.1 per heat |
| Hot-dip galvanized Q235B | Zinc skin shields the same structural grade from rain, snow and salt air | Outdoor walkways, trench covers, facades, exterior treads | Baseline plus galvanizing | MTC 3.1 + coating sampling to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 |
| SS304 stainless | Corrosion-resistant without any coating | Food plants, washdown areas, general chemical duty | Premium | MTC EN 10204 3.1 per heat |
| SS316 stainless | Added chloride resistance for harsh exposure | Marine, coastal, chemical process areas | Premium plus | MTC EN 10204 3.1 per heat |
Same family, other angles: Q235 steel grating (the grade page) · carbon steel bar grating (the full carbon line) · structural grating (the category page, structural duty by application).

Material traceability
From Heat Number to Panel — the Q235B Traceability Chain
A structural specifier does not take "structural steel" on faith. Here is the chain that ties the grade claim on this page to paperwork you can check — three links, none of them optional.
1 · Heat number at the mill
Every batch of Q235B flat bars we buy is identified by its mill heat number. The material identity of your order is fixed before any fabrication starts — not assigned afterwards.
2 · MTC verified at goods-in
The mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1 is checked against each delivered heat at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Steel that cannot show its paper does not enter production.
3 · Heat-to-panel on the shipping docs
Panels are cut, banded and packed so the certificate set in your shipment maps to the heats your panels were actually cut from. That is why we can put mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment — and let you preview the cert set before you commit.
Why specify structural grade
Why Specifiers Order Structural Steel Grating Factory-Direct
Any size, any grade — cut to your drawings
Custom structural grating from small MOQ: panel sizes, spans and banding to your drawings. Q235B is the default structural grade; other grade options are quoted to your specification, not substituted.
Heavy-duty bars for spans and wheel loads
Bearing bars run from 20×3 mm up toward 100×8 mm as loads demand — longer clear spans, forklift and vehicle traffic, closer centers where the load table says so. Panels are produced to ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 reference practice.
Structural grating + mill cert, no middlemen
Factory-direct with no middlemen: structural grating plus MTC 3.1 on every batch, shipped FOB Tianjin. Wholesale and project quantities quoted itemized, per m² or per ton, within 24 hours.
Applications
Where Structural-Grade Panels Carry the Load
The same Q235B grade, sized up or down by duty. These are the positions specifiers most often put structural steel grating into — each one quoted with the bar size the load table calls for.
Mezzanines & plant platforms
Load-rated flooring over long spans, with banding and fixing layout to your drawings.
Industrial walkways & access
Open-mesh floors around plant and pipe racks — self-draining, visible, quick to install.
Wheel-load ramps & docks
Heavier bars and closer centers for forklift and vehicle traffic, serrated where traction matters.
Stair treads & guardrail infill
Structural-grade treads with nosing options, plus matching infill panels for guardrails.
Choosing by use case instead of by grade? The structural grating category page maps structural duty to applications; this page keeps the focus on the steel grade and its traceability. Explore all application pages →

Grade & test documents
Every heat of Q235B — or SS304 / SS316 when a corrosion-resistant grade is specified — enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1, mapped to your heats
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531
Structural panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice (MBG 532 for heavy-duty classes), with weld inspection on our five-stage QC plan.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
When structural panels are galvanized, coating thickness is checked by sampling on every batch before release. Painted or primed finishes are prepared to your coating spec.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How are mill test certificates issued for structural steel grating?
Every heat of Q235B arrives with its mill test certificate, verified at goods-in as the first of our five QC stages. We then ship mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment, mapped to the heat numbers your panels were cut from.
Which steel grade should I specify for structural duty?
Q235B structural carbon steel covers most platform spans and wheel loads and is our default structural grade. SS304 or SS316 stainless is the corrosion-resistant alternative for wet or chemical areas, and other grade options are quoted to your specification.
Can structural steel grating be painted or galvanized?
Yes. Panels ship black, shop-primed for site painting, or hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 reference practice through our galvanizing partner. Galvanizing adds 2–3 days, already counted inside the 15–25 working-day production window after drawing confirmation.
