Steel grating material comparison

Why Galvanized Is the Default Weather Protection

Galv grating is a finish and a material story at once: a Q235B carbon steel core carries the load, and a hot-dip zinc skin stands between the steel and the weather. That combination is the default outdoor choice — here is how it sits against the other three materials we run.

Material Weather & corrosion behavior Typical environment Relative cost Documentation
Carbon steel Q235B Needs coating or paint for weather exposure Indoor platforms, dry plant floors Baseline MTC EN 10204 3.1 per heat
Hot-dip galvanized Q235B Zinc skin shields the steel core from rain, snow and salt air Outdoor walkways, trench covers, facades, exterior treads Baseline plus galvanizing MTC 3.1 + coating sampling to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461
SS304 stainless Corrosion-resistant without any coating Food plants, washdown areas, general chemical duty Premium MTC EN 10204 3.1 per heat
SS316 stainless Added chloride resistance for harsh exposure Marine, coastal, chemical process areas Premium plus MTC EN 10204 3.1 per heat

The galvanized line

Steel Core, Zinc Skin — How Galv Grating Is Built

Q235B bearing bars cross bars steel core panel

1 · The steel core

Bearing bars and cross bars of Q235B carbon steel, joined on our welded steel grating line or press-locked for close mesh — the same construction as our black steel grating.

panel dipped in molten zinc

2 · Hot-dip immersion

Finished panels go to a certified galvanizing partner near our mill and are immersed in molten zinc. The coating bonds to the steel and reaches every bar, weld and cut edge — typically 2–3 days, already inside your production window.

3 · Coating check per batch

Coating thickness is checked by sampling on every galvanized batch, referenced to ASTM A123 and ISO 1461 — the fourth of our five QC stages — before any panel is released.

Why specify galvanized

Why Buyers Default to Galvanized Grating Outdoors

Zinc skin over a steel core

Hot-dip galvanizing is the default weather protection over Q235B: the zinc layer stands between the steel and rain, snow and salt air, covering outdoor walkways, trench covers and facades year-round.

Traceable material, MTC with every shipment

The Q235B core is traceable heat by heat through mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment — verified at goods-in, the first of our five QC stages.

Custom sizes, grade options, small MOQ

Panels cut and banded to your drawings, welded or press-locked, any size up to 1.25 m × 6 m. Small trial orders welcome; other grade options on request.

Applications

Where Galvanized Grating Earns Its Zinc

Anywhere steel meets weather, standing water or de-icing salt — the zinc skin keeps the Q235B core working without repaint cycles.

Outdoor walkways & catwalks

Open mesh sheds rain, snow and debris — zinc keeps the frame sound season after season.

Municipal trench & drainage covers

Galvanized covers over road and curb trenches, gullies and catch basins.

Exterior & escape stair treads

Galvanized treads with serrated or plain surfaces for fire escapes and outdoor stairs.

Tree pits, fences & facade grids

Open galvanized grids for planting pits, gates and facade screening.

Materials & test documents

Every heat of Q235B enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in. Galvanized panels leave the line with mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment — documentation, not promises:

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1, per heat
  • Coating thickness results sampled per galvanized batch
  • Factory inspection report with every shipment
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

Standards & compliance

Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request

ASTM A123 / ISO 1461

Galvanized coating checked by sampling on every batch, referenced to both standards, before panels are released.

ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531

Panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with weld inspection on our five-stage QC plan.

CE & SGS tested

Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the galvanized coating checked?

Coating thickness is checked by sampling on every galvanized batch, referenced to ASTM A123 and ISO 1461, before panels are released for shipping.

What steel is under the zinc?

A Q235B carbon steel core — the same structural grade used across our welded and press-locked lines — with its heat traceable through mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment.

How long does galvanizing add to production?

Hot-dip galvanizing runs at a certified partner plant near our mill and typically takes 2–3 days, already counted inside the 15–25 working-day production window. Samples in 5–7 working days include galvanizing.
