Grid terminology & formats
"Grid" Is Grating — and the Grid Format Chooses the Duty
Municipal and fencing buyers write "galvanized grid" or "galvanized steel grid" on their RFQs; the drawings that follow describe steel grating — load-bearing bars and cross bars locked into a regular open mesh, then zinc coated. Here is the bridge between the two vocabularies, and the geometry decision that follows it.
The terminology bridge
- Galvanized grid — an open-grid steel grating panel, hot-dip galvanized after fabrication
- Galvanized steel grid — the same panel, named by its material: Q235B bar grid under zinc
- Grid mesh — the same product with the emphasis on opening geometry — see Galvanized Grid Mesh for the mesh-first view
Whichever term your RFQ uses, it lands on the same quote desk here — welded or press-locked, Q235B or a grade option, zinc to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461.
Mesh geometry under HDG protection
Two constructions carry the outdoor grid catalog: welded grids at 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers for drainage and load, and press-locked close mesh down to 11 / 11 mm where heels, litter or small debris must not pass. Because panels are galvanized after cutting and banding, the zinc covers every fresh edge of the chosen geometry — see press-locked construction and welded construction.
Why outdoor duty pairs grid and zinc
The open grid sheds rain, snow and spills instead of holding them against the steel; the hot-dip zinc keeps the mesh sound through road salt, washdown humidity and freeze-thaw. One material decision — galvanized Q235B — covers trench covers at street level, tree pits on sidewalks and fence infill on exposed sites.
Rust-resistant, not rust-proof language: no coating makes steel immortal, but batch-sampled HDG is the honest outdoor default.

Is a galvanized grid the same as galvanized grating?
Yes — in buying language the two names cover the same product. A galvanized grid is an open-grid steel grating panel: load-bearing bars and cross bars locked into a regular mesh, then hot-dip galvanized after fabrication. We quote grid and grating requests from the same drawings, in welded or press-locked construction.
What certificates come with a galvanized grid order?
You receive mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment, covering the Q235B heat chemistry, plus a factory inspection report. The zinc coating itself is sampled to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 on every galvanized batch before release.
Which grid openings suit trench covers, tree pits and fence infill?
Trench covers usually run 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers to balance drainage with wheel and foot loads. Tree pits call for closer press-locked mesh — down to 11 / 11 mm — to keep heels and litter out of the soil. Fence infill is governed by post spacing and wind load.
