Terminology, decoded honestly
What "Iron Grating" Actually Means When You Order It
"Iron grating" is a buyer's word, not a material grade. When a purchase order says iron, the panel that actually ships — from any serious factory, including ours — is low-carbon steel. Here is the honest translation table, term by term.
| Term on your RFQ | What actually ships | Why it works that way |
|---|---|---|
| Iron grating | Low-carbon steel grating — Q235B on our drawings | Ductile, weldable, load-rated: exactly what a floor panel needs |
| Cast iron grating | Not supplied as floor grating | Cast iron is brittle — it cracks under impact instead of bending |
| Wrought iron grating | Low-carbon steel sections, same construction | True wrought iron is no longer rolled; the name survives in drawings |
| Galvanized iron grating | Q235B panels + hot-dip galvanized coating | The zinc layer fights the weather — the core metal is carbon steel |
| Industrial metal grating | Same bar construction, wider material family | Q235B as the default; SS304 / SS316 where corrosion leads the spec |
| Floor metal grating | Load-rated open-mesh floor panels | Specified by span, bar size and spacing — not by metal name |
Your drawing says iron and your inspector says steel? Send it over — we will state the exact grade in the 24-hour quote, and back it with the mill certificate.
The honest answer
Iron Is Shorthand. Steel Is the Material. Certificates Settle It.
"Iron" is shorthand, not a grade
Most RFQs that say iron grating describe standard welded or press-locked bar grating. The grade that answers that description is Q235B low-carbon steel — ductile, weldable, load-rated. That is what we quote, and the drawing states it plainly, so nothing is left to guesswork.
Cast iron is not floor grating
Cast iron is strong in compression but brittle: it cracks under the impact and point loads a walking surface sees every shift. Nobody serious builds floor grating from it, and we will not quote it as such. If a legacy drawing says cast iron, we flag it before production, not after.
The MTC settles it, heat by heat
Words are cheap; mill certificates are not. Every heat of Q235B enters production with a mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1, verified at goods-in — stage one of our five-stage QC — and the certificate ships with your panels. What the paper says is what you receive.
Why buyers order it anyway
The Same Panel Whether You Write Iron or Steel
Heavy-duty and anti-slip, in one panel
Bearing bars from 20×3 mm up to 100×8 mm carry wheel and point loads; serrated tops add grip on wet or oily floors. Specify by duty class — load tables available on request.
Custom sizes, small trial orders
Panels cut and banded to your drawings — 19W4 stock designations or fully custom dimensions. Small trial orders are welcome, so you can test the material before committing to a full program.
Certified & tested, reports on request
Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1 with every heat, hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461, and a factory inspection report with every shipment — documents you can hand to your own QA.
Applications
Where "Iron Grating" Ends Up Working
Call it iron grating, industrial metal grating or floor metal grating — the same Q235B open-mesh panels drain spills, shed debris and carry traffic across the plant.
Industrial metal grating platforms
Maintenance platforms, mezzanines and equipment floors in load-rated Q235B panels.
Floor metal grating for plant floors
Open-mesh floors that let spills fall through and keep the walking surface visible.
Walkways & catwalks
Elevated access routes that drain rain and stay non-slip with serrated bars.
Trench & drainage covers
Galvanized covers for trenches and gullies — heel-proof openings optional.

What the certificate proves
"Iron" never appears on a mill certificate — a stated grade does. Every heat of Q235B is verified at goods-in, the first of our five QC stages, and the paperwork travels with the panels:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1, per heat
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
EN 10204 Type 3.1 MTC
A mill test certificate per heat of Q235B, verified at goods-in and shipped with the order — the grade on paper matches the steel in the crate.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
Galvanized coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before panels are released.
ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531
Welded panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with weld checks on our five-stage QC plan.

FAQ
Iron Grating Questions, Answered Plainly
Is iron grating actually made of iron?
In practice, no. What the market calls iron grating is open-mesh panels made from low-carbon steel — Q235B on our drawings — documented by a mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1. Cast iron is brittle and is not used for floor grating, because it cracks under impact instead of bending.
How can I verify the material in my shipment?
Every heat of Q235B that enters production carries a mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1, verified at goods-in as the first of our five QC stages. The certificate ships with the panels, alongside the factory inspection report.
What finishes are available on iron grating?
Black (uncoated mill finish) for indoor or paint-on-site work, or hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 for weather exposure. Galvanizing adds 2–3 days at a certified partner plant and is already counted inside the 15–25 day production window.
