Material comparison
Steel Grating Material Comparison — Where "Iron" Fits
Material is the first filter in a grating specification. This table compares the four grades we quote most — the honest way to see what the word iron buys you, and when to step up to zinc or stainless.
| Material | Corrosion behavior | Typical environments | Relative cost | Documents |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon steel Q235B | Needs a coating — shop primer, paint or hot-dip zinc | Dry indoor platforms, shop floors, stair stringers, railed-off walkways | The baseline of the four | MTC EN 10204 3.1 per heat |
| Hot-dip galvanized Q235B | Zinc coating shields the steel — corrosion-resistant outdoors | Outdoor walkways, trench covers, guardrails, plant perimeters | Carbon steel plus a galvanizing step | MTC + coating checks to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 |
| Stainless SS304 | Corrosion-resistant with no coating at all | Food plants, washdown areas, general chemical duty | Higher than coated carbon steel | MTC EN 10204 3.1 |
| Stainless SS316 | Strongest of the four against chlorides and brine | Coastal and marine platforms, chemical drainage, saline washdown | The highest of the four | MTC EN 10204 3.1 |
When buyers ask for wrought iron grating, the panels we quote are Q235B low-carbon steel sections — the modern mill equivalent of the old irons, and the grade proven by the mill test certificate that ships with every order. Corten steel grating and other special grades are quoted per project.

Honest terminology
What "Wrought Iron" Means When You Order Grating
The term survives in drawings and requisitions long after the material left the mills. Here is the straight story — no romanticizing, no bait-and-switch.
Traditional wrought iron — a heritage material
True wrought iron is a hand-forged, very low-carbon iron with fibrous slag inclusions — the material of historic gates and railings. It is no longer milled at scale anywhere; today it survives mainly as salvage and specialist restoration stock. If your project genuinely requires it, we will tell you honestly what is feasible rather than quote a name.
What mills roll today — low-carbon steel
Modern iron grating is produced from low-carbon steel sections. On our lines that grade is Q235B structural carbon steel — the workhorse behind welded and press-locked grating worldwide. Same familiar word on the requisition, honest spec on paper: the grade on the certificate is exactly what ships.
The proof is the certificate
Every heat is traceable, and panels ship with mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment — grade, chemical analysis and mechanical values in writing, ready to preview before you order. That is what separates a material claim from a material fact.
Why specify iron grating here
Why Buyers Order Iron Grating From the Mill
Custom wrought iron grating, any size
Rectangular panels, radiused shapes or ornamental project work — cut and banded to your drawings, with grade options on request. Corten steel grating and other special grades are quoted per project, never claimed as stock.
Mill cert with every shipment
We ship mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment, traceable heat by heat — batch-tested material, ready to preview with your quote. No middlemen between you and the certificate.
Anti-rust finishes for wet sites
Black mill finish with oil protection for export, shop-primed, or hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 for long-life outdoor service. For washdown or marine duty, step up to SS304 / SS316 — corrosion-resistant by chemistry, not by promise.
Applications
Where Iron Grating Is Specified
Open mesh that sheds water, ice and debris — Q235B iron grating carries foot and wheel traffic wherever coated steel is enough and stainless is overkill.
Platforms & mezzanines
Load-rated open-mesh flooring for plant access levels and maintenance decks.
Walkways & catwalks
Elevated routes that drain rain and spills, with serrated surfaces for grip.
Trench & drainage covers
Covers for trench drains and gullies — heel-proof close mesh as an option.
Custom shapes & ornamental work
Radiused or non-rectangular panels quoted per project — engineering drawings and an MTC, not vague promises.

Materials & test documents
Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1, per heat
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531
Iron grating panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with weld inspection on our five-stage QC plan.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
Galvanized coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before panels are released.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is your wrought iron grating actually made of wrought iron?
No — and we say so plainly. True wrought iron is a heritage material no longer milled at scale. What buyers call wrought iron grating today is produced from modern low-carbon steel sections, Q235B on our lines, and we prove that grade with mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment.
Which material should I choose for wet or outdoor sites?
For outdoor duty, Q235B with hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 is the usual answer. For washdown, food, chemical or marine exposure, specify SS304 or SS316 stainless — the material comparison table above maps each grade to its environment.
Can you make custom shapes and small orders?
Yes. Panels are cut and banded to your drawings, and ornamental or custom-shape projects are quoted per project. Small trial orders are welcome — samples ship in 5–7 working days and production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation.
