Selection guide

304 or 316? Match the Grade to the Environment

Most buyers arrive here already sold on stainless — the real decision is which grade. Whether your RFQ says stainless grating, grating SS or SS304 / SS316 panels, the answer follows the same four environments. Corrosion resistance is not absolute — it is chemistry: chlorides are what attack stainless, so locate your site on this table before you spend money.

Your environment Typical conditions Grade we recommend Why this grade
Indoor washdown Food and beverage floors, daily hose-down, detergents and mild sanitizers SS304 The standard hygienic-floor grade — corrosion-resistant against routine moisture and cleaning chemicals, easy to keep bright.
Outdoor, inland Rain, sun and foot traffic, no salt exposure — plant walkways, roof access SS304 Holds its finish outdoors away from chlorides, with no coating to inspect or repaint.
Coastal & marine Salt spray, splash zones, jetties, offshore and harbor decks SS316 The molybdenum-bearing chloride grade — where SS304 would tea-stain and pit, SS316 keeps standing.
Chemical & process Chemical plants, electroplating, pulp and paper, chloride-bearing media SS316 Better resistance to many acids and chlorides — send us your media list and we verify compatibility in the quote, before the grade is locked.

Between two environments, or a spec sheet that demands a particular grade? Send your environment details — we will spec the grade inside the 24-hour quote.

An honest word

When NOT to Pay for Stainless

We make and sell stainless grating every week — and we still tell some buyers to order galvanized carbon steel instead. Stainless earns its cost only where the environment attacks coatings. If your floor is dry or sheltered, paying the stainless premium buys you nothing but a brighter floor.

Pay for stainless when…

  • Constant moisture, washdown or standing water is present.
  • Chlorides are in play — coastal air, salt spray, brine or de-icing runoff.
  • Hygiene rules demand a cleanable, coating-free surface.
  • Recoating access is impossible or more expensive than the upgrade.

Save the money when…

  • The floor is dry, indoors or fully sheltered from weather.
  • It is general outdoor duty with no salt — a zinc coating does that job.
  • The tender is budget-led and the design life is short or temporary.
  • Heavy abrasion or impact will scuff any surface — repair carbon steel instead.

For these cases start at hot-dip galvanized grating or compare galvanized bar grating and carbon steel bar grating.

Option Corrosion protection Best for Watch out for
Q235B carbon steel, bare None — rusts unless coated Dry indoor duty, painted on site by you Not for wet or outdoor service as-supplied
Hot-dip galvanized Q235B Zinc coating per ASTM A123 / ISO 1461, thickness checked per batch Outdoor walkways, platforms, trench covers — the default weatherproof choice Cut edges expose steel; chlorides and acids eat the coating
SS304 Corrosion-resistant alloy — no coating to damage Washdown floors, food plants, inland outdoor duty Can tea-stain near salt; step up to 316 at the coast
SS316 Molybdenum-bearing alloy — the chloride grade Coastal, marine and chemical environments The premium option — only pay where chlorides justify it

Still undecided between zinc and alloy? Ask for both in one quote — same drawings, side by side, itemized FOB Tianjin.

How the order runs

From Certified Heat to Bare, Bright Panel

1 · Certified material in, verified

SS304 and SS316 flats arrive with mill test certificates; heat numbers are checked at goods-in — the first stage of our five-stage QC. What the cert says is what you get.

SS304 / SS316 bars cross bars one solid panel

2 · Welded or press-locked

Stainless runs on the same in-house lines as our carbon steel — electro-forged welding for open mesh, press-locking for close mesh down to 11 / 11 mm.

3 · Ships bare, no coating loop

The alloy is the protection — no galvanizing step, no coating wait. Panels pass final inspection and ship with the inspection report and mill certs.

Why stainless

Why Buyers Specify SS Grating for Wet Sites

Corrosion-resistant, not coated

Protection lives in the alloy, not in a paint or zinc layer that can chip, scratch or wear through — corrosion-resistant performance where washdown and standing water kill coated panels.

Any grade, any size — small MOQ

SS304 or SS316, made to spec and cut to your sizes from small trial orders to full containers — factory-direct, no middlemen between your drawings and the mill.

Mill cert on every batch

Batch-tested SS grating ships with traceable mill test certificates — EN 10204 Type 3.1 — so the grade on the drawing is the grade in the container, heat number by heat number.

Applications

Where Stainless Grating Earns Its Keep

Four environments where the grade decision has already been made for you — if your site looks like one of these, stainless is the answer.

Food & beverage washdown floors

Daily hose-down, detergents, hygiene audits — SS304 platforms and drainage floors stay bright and cleanable.

Chemical & process plants

Electroplating lines, pulp and paper, chloride media — SS316 gratings where a coating would not survive the year.

Coastal & marine access

Jetties, harbor walkways, offshore decks — salt spray around the clock is SS316 territory.

Hygienic drainage covers

Trench and gully covers in wash zones — open mesh that drains instantly, nothing painted to flake into the process.

Materials & test documents

Stainless is bought on trust in the chemistry, so we put the paperwork in the deal: every SS304 / SS316 order ships with mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment — traceable to the heat number, not a generic grade claim:

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1, heat-traceable
  • Factory inspection report with every shipment
  • Certificate samples ready to preview before you order
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose SS304 or SS316 for my site?

Match the grade to the environment. SS304 covers indoor washdown, general outdoor rain and most food-plant floors. Move up to SS316 whenever chlorides are present: coastal salt spray, marine splash zones, de-icing salt runoff and chemical process areas. Send your environment details and we confirm the grade in the 24-hour quote.

When should I not pay for stainless grating?

If the floor is dry, sheltered or indoors with no chlorides or chemicals, hot-dip galvanized Q235B carbon steel does the same structural job at a lower relative cost — see our hot-dip galvanized grating page. Stainless earns its price in wet, salty or chemically aggressive areas where a coated panel would need early replacement.

Do stainless grating orders ship with mill test certificates?

Yes — we ship mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment, traceable to the heat number, together with a factory inspection report. Certificate samples are ready to preview before you place the order.
